*Chapter 17: đź’€The Fourth Sealđź’€*
****{Joseon Palace, Forbidden Archives}****
The door hadn’t moved in forty years.
Four seals burned into black wood. Three dead. The fourth cracked red, pulsing like a heartbeat under skin.
Seo-yeon’s blood dripped from her nose onto the stone. Her shadow wasn’t behind her anymore. It stood separate, taller, edges fraying into smoke that didn’t belong to any light in the room.
“Seo-yeon, step back,” Yoo said. His voice was low. He was watching the door, not her.
She didn’t move. Her hand hovered over the wood. Cold bit her skin before she touched it. Memories that weren’t hers slammed into her skull.
_A man’s hands on this same door. His voice hoarse. “If I fall, you finish it. Don’t let him out.”_
Her father. Min Jae-hyun. Royal Keeper.
Tae-wook grabbed her wrist and pulled her back. The motion saved her. The fourth seal split down the middle with a crack like a gunshot in a stone quarry.
“Too late,” Tae-wook said. He stepped in front of her, sword up, favoring his broken wrist.
From inside the door came a breath. Long. Hungry. It smelled of wet earth and old graves.
Seo-yeon cut her palm without thinking. Blood welled hot and fast. She pressed it to the door.
“My father’s blood sealed you,” she said. Her voice sounded wrong. Lower. Like someone else was using her throat. “Mine will hold you again.”
The door shuddered.
For one second, silence. The kind of silence that comes before a scream.
Then the wood splintered.
Darkness poured out. Not shadow. Not smoke. Something thicker. It moved against gravity, against air, drinking light.
And in the middle of it, two holes opened. No eyes. Just empty. Looking through her into the thing her father had buried.
“Min Seo-yeon,” it said. The voice was everywhere. In the stone. In her teeth. “You’re weaker than he was.”
Seo-yeon didn’t back down. Her shadow rose behind her, merging with the darkness.
“Good,” she said. Blood dripped from her palm to the floor, feeding the old salt circle carved into the stone. “Easier to kill.”
The darkness lunged.
Tae-wook moved. He didn’t think. He threw himself between Seo-yeon and the thing coming out of her father’s grave. His sword passed through it like it wasn’t there.
Cold hit him like a physical blow. Frost formed on his eyelashes. He staggered.
Yoo grabbed the file from his coat and threw it into the darkness. “Burn!”
The paper didn’t burn. It dissolved. Letters turned to ash mid-air. The salt circle flared white.
The darkness screamed. Not human. The sound of stone cracking under pressure, of metal snapping, of something ancient being forced back into a hole it didn’t want to be in.
Seo-yeon fell to her knees. Blood poured from her nose, her ears. Her shadow collapsed back into her, dragging the darkness with it.
The door slammed shut.
The fourth seal reformed. The red cracks sealed over, black and smoking.
Silence fell.
Seo-yeon hit the floor.
“Seo-yeon!” Tae-wook was at her side instantly, checking her pulse.
She was alive. Barely. Her skin was ice cold.
Yoo stood over them, breathing hard, watching the door. It didn’t move.
“It’s not over,” he said quietly. “He’s just waiting now.”
From down the hall came a scream. Lady Yoon’s scream.
Tae-wook looked up, eyes hard.
“Then we finish it,” he said.
*{Joseon Palace, Queen’s Wing – Private Room}
Lady Yoon’s scream tore through the corridor.
She was on her knees, holding a finger bone to her forehead. The room was freezing. Frost spread across the windowpane in branching patterns.
The door exploded inward.
Her body stood in the doorway. Eyes wrong. Shadow wrong.
“Master wants the girl,” it said through her mouth. Yoon’s voice, flat and empty.
Yoon didn’t flinch. “Master wants a lot of things.”
She whispered the old words. Keeper’s words. The words her brother had spoken before they took him.
The bone in her hands grew warm.
The possessed Yoon took a step forward.
Yoon stood.
“Not today,” she said.
She drove the bone into her own palm.
Pain lanced up her arm. The room flared with blue light. Not fire. Light. Cold, silent, like the candle in Seo-yeon’s pocket.
The possessed body flinched. For half a second, the wrongness in its eyes dimmed.
Yoon grabbed a knife from the bedside and slashed it across her forearm. Blood hit the floor. The salt circle carved into the floorboards flared to life.
“Get out of her,” Yoon said.
The thing in her laughed. It sounded like grinding bone.
“You can’t hold me, little spy,” it said. “I built you.”
Yoon smiled. It wasn’t a nice smile.
“I know,” she said. “And I know where you hid the rest of your bones.”
The possessed body froze.
Yoon’s eyes went cold. “Forty years ago, you didn’t take twelve people. You took thirteen. My brother was the thirteenth. You forgot to burn him.”
The blue light flared.
The possessed Yoon dropped to its knees, clawing at its own throat.
Yoon knelt beside it. Her voice was quiet.
“Say his name.”
The thing choked.
“Han Min-joon,” it said.
“Good,” Yoon said. She drove the knife into its heart.
The body convulsed once, then went limp. Yoon’s eyes fluttered shut. She collapsed forward.

Tae-wook was carrying Seo-yeon when they reached the Queen’s Wing.
Yoo stopped like dead in the hallway.
The door to Yoon’s room was open. Salt lines on the floor were blackened and smoking. Inside, Yoon lay on the floor, breathing but unconscious. The body of the possessed guard lay beside her, already going cold.
Yoo knelt beside her and checked her pulse. Strong.
“What did she do?” Tae-wook asked.
Yoo looked at the salt circle, then at the bone clutched in Yoon’s bloody hand.
“She just bought us time,” he said. “And told us where to find the rest of him.”
Seo-yeon stirred in Tae-wook’s arms. Her eyes opened, unfocused.
“Father?” she whispered.
Yoo looked at her. “We need to talk about your father. All of it. Before he wakes up for good.”
Outside, the wind picked up. Somewhere deep in the palace, stone shifted.
The Shadow Man was listening.
