The shadows that bind beyond the edge of night.
Chapter Five
The Shifting Road
Elias’s pulse thundered in his ears. The invisible footprints remained, pressed into the dust, waiting. The air felt sharp, each breath scraping his throat.
He forced himself to move, inching backward, never taking his eyes off the empty space where the footprints stood. His mind raced, logic fraying at the edges.
This isn’t real.
But the road under his feet was solid, the chill in the air biting. Shadows rippled along the ground, pooling and stretching like ink.
Elias turned and ran. The road twisted beneath him, each step dragging as if he waded through thick tar. The sky above dimmed, the sun smothered by a blanket of clouds.
The landscape around him shifted—trees sprouted along the roadside, gnarled and blackened, their branches weaving into a tangled canopy. The open fields vanished, swallowed by a dark, oppressive forest.
Elias skidded to a stop, panting. The road had become a narrow dirt path, winding into the trees. Roots coiled like snakes, the earth beneath him pulsing faintly, alive.
A sound echoed through the woods—a soft rustling, like paper-thin wings brushing against stone.
And then—
A voice, familiar and wrong: “Elias... come home.”
