Chapter 2: Blind

Maeve clutched her wedding dress and ran out of the hotel as fast as her feet could carry her. The driver called, and she answered breathlessly while rushing down the stairs. "Hello? I'm right at the entrance of the Shangri-La... You're here already? Okay, okay, I'm coming out now!" She hung up and quickly glanced at the screen, muttering to herself, "Black car, license plate ending in 68..." Behind her, the sounds of hurried footsteps and shouts of "The bride's gone!" and "Catch the bride!" grew closer. Maeve glanced at her cumbersome high heels, kicked them off, and sprinted barefoot out of the hotel, clutching the shoes in one hand. A black car had just pulled up to the curb in front of the hotel. Maeve's eyes lit up when she saw the license plate. "68! This is it!" She dashed over, yanked open the passenger door, and threw herself into the seat. "Go, go! Drive! As fast as you can!" Julius Murphy's car hadn't even come to a complete stop when this unexpected guest barged in. He raised an eyebrow and glanced at her. This unexpected guest was wearing a wedding dress. And her face seemed a little familiar! Julius narrowed his eyes and looked out the window. The names of the bride and groom were displayed on the red archway at the hotel entrance, flapping in the wind. Maya? Right, wasn't this the Smith family's precious daughter his grandfather wanted him to marry today? She wasn't uglier than in the pictures, but this situation... Was she running away from the wedding? Maeve fastened her seatbelt and locked the car door, but the car didn't move. She looked at the driver anxiously. "Hey, mister, let's go! It's a matter of life and death; hurry up..." When she accidentally saw the man's face, Maeve subconsciously swallowed. 'Oh my god, this Uber driver is so handsome!' He wore a silver-gray suit, and his chiseled face held strikingly handsome features. His deep-set eyes were framed by sharp eyebrows, and his thin lips were slightly curved in a smirk. He exuded an aloof aura mixed with a natural wildness and wickedness. He could clearly rely on his looks to make a living, but he chose to work hard... How inspiring! "A matter of life and death?" Julius's long fingers tapped leisurely on the steering wheel, his magnetic voice laced with amusement. 'Oh my god! Not only is this Uber driver devastatingly handsome, but his voice is also so mesmerizing!' Maeve swallowed again, nodding frantically. "Yes, yes, yes! Let's go, mister. It's a matter of life and death! I'll give you double, no, triple the fare!" Julius looked at her flushed face and started the car, taking his time. "Running away from marriage to save someone?" Or was she rushing to elope with her lover? Maeve turned her head to look at Zion and the bodyguards chasing after her from the hotel entrance. She let out a long sigh of relief and clutched her chest. "Yes! That greedy and lustful old man, my father, wants to sell me to a sick and disabled tycoon. He even said the priest told him it could cure his illness! Can you believe it? What era are we living in? He's still so superstitious! If I didn't run, I would've become a sacrifice to medieval superstition!" Julius raised an eyebrow. "Is that sick and disabled tycoon named Julius Murphy?" Maeve blinked in surprise. "How... How did you know?" As soon as she asked, she seemed to have figured it out and chuckled. "You must have seen the names of the bride and groom at the hotel entrance!" She sighed. "Hey... Actually, I've never even met him. I just feel sorry for him. If he's sick, he should go see a doctor. How can marrying someone cure his illness? What are doctors for? It's just pitiful!" Julius snorted. "Oh? You abandoned your groom and ran away, yet you still have sympathy for him?" Maeve immediately straightened her back, her face full of righteousness. "Well, sympathy aside, I still have to fight against medieval superstition!" As soon as she finished speaking, the phone she had been clutching in her hand rang. Seeing the number on the screen, Maeve's expression changed slightly. She answered cautiously, "Hello? I'm already in the car... I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. Please cancel the ride." How embarrassing, she got into the wrong car! She hung up the phone and looked at the man driving with an awkward expression. "Sir, you... you're not the Uber?" Julius smirked and threw out two words. "Private car." Maeve breathed a sigh of relief. "No wonder this car looks so luxurious! This is my first time in a private car! But... I didn't delay your business, did I? You can just drop me off at the intersection ahead." "You're not delaying me." Maeve scratched her head sheepishly. "You private car drivers all dress so formally, huh?" "Yes, picking up the groom for a wedding." "Huh?" Maeve was stunned. Julius looked at her seriously. "But the bride ran away, so there's no need for the wedding." Maeve was ten times more stunned. "No way? Why did the bride run away?" "She's blind." Before Maeve could continue her exclamations, two cars suddenly swerved in front of them, blocking their path. With a screech, Julius slammed on the brakes.
