Chapter 4: Playing Along

637 Words
Zion, seeing Luke approaching, rushed over obsequiously. "Mr. Young, we've stopped them!" Luke ignored him, pushing up his black-rimmed glasses to peer into Julius's car. Catching sight of the bride, he let out a sigh of relief. His boss had made it clear he wanted to avoid the wedding, leaving Luke racking his brains for solutions. Then came the news of the bride's escape! He'd chased after them, only to realize the car they were supposed to intercept looked suspiciously like his boss's. And it was! But... why was his boss personally catching the bride? "What in the world..." Luke muttered to himself before politely knocking on Julius's window. The window slowly descended, revealing the man's cold, handsome profile. Luke nodded slightly. "Mr. Mu..." "Are you from the Murphy family?" Julius interrupted, his eyes narrowed. Luke blinked, startled. This wasn't the reaction he expected. What was his boss playing at? His survival instincts kicking in, he glanced at the nervous woman in the passenger seat and instantly understood. Clearing his throat, he said, "Yes! Sir, do you realize you've taken the Murphy family's bride?" A smirk played on Julius's lips. He pulled Maeve's arm, bringing her closer. "Tell Julius Murphy this woman is carrying my baby!" Maeve's face lit up, nodding vigorously. "Yes, yes, yes! Tell that to your Mr. Murphy! If he doesn't want to be a cuckold, he'd better cancel this wedding and let us go! Love can't be forced!" Luke choked, speechless. Was this... some new couple's routine? His boss was full of surprises! He stole a glance at his boss's impassive face, then turned to Zion. "Mr. Smith, your daughter is pregnant and still wants to marry into the Murphy family? This is fraud!" Zion's face paled. "Mr. Young, please! My daughter is spouting nonsense. She has no fianc??, no baby! She's still... Just look at the gentleman in the car. He's clearly someone of discerning taste. Why would he be interested in my daughter?" Maeve fumed, her eyes welling up. "See that? That's my father! He's literally selling me off!" Only she knew the tears were genuine. Her father constantly shattered her expectations, humiliating her like this in front of everyone. Did he even care for her? Julius chuckled. "He's not entirely wrong." Maeve almost choked on her indignation. "I'm not that bad, am I? Even Julius found me worthy! Do you know who Julius is? The heir to the Murphy fortune, worth hundreds of billions!" "His worth is irrelevant. What matters is that he's old, ugly, and crippled, which is probably why he's marrying you," Julius said casually. Maeve was speechless. 'Well, never mind that this man is narcissistic, but does he have to be so mean?' Maeve was about to retort, but Zion grabbed her arm. "Come with me to the hospital for a check-up! The Smith family won't be humiliated like this. We need to give the Murphy family an explanation!" "No way!" Maeve wrenched her arm free, glaring at him. "Dear father, if you keep this up, don't blame me for exposing Maya!" Her running away might cause trouble, maybe even lead to the wedding being canceled, but if the Murphy family learned about Zion's plan to steal their inheritance by swapping his daughters, the entire Smith family would face their wrath. She might not have been treated well, but she didn't want to destroy them completely. However, if Zion pushed her, she wouldn't hesitate to become the family annihilator! Zion sighed dramatically. "My dear daughter, are you going to repeat that ridiculous lie about being Maya's twin sister? Can't you come up with something new? Everyone in Silk City knows I only have one daughter!" Maeve stared at him, stunned. This shameless man... He dared to turn it around on her? Could he be any more despicable?
