EXCERPT:
Alaric knocked on Carter's front door that morning to ask her to help him with the town's event for the day. So she suited up before following him in her SUV to the town square where a group of volunteers were already preparing the town for the Night of
Illuminations.
Some were hanging tanterns from the trees as Carol Lockwood was making a speech for them and the citizens. "As a long time member of the Historical Society, I am
especially proud to be kicking off this day of festivities. Thank you, volunteers.
Tonight, we turn off our town's lights and flare up our lanterns in honor of the night of
Illumination started by our founders 150 years ago. Here's founding family member
Tobias Fell with a history lesson. Then everyone applauded in response.
Jeremy turned to Ric and Carter. "What are we doing here?"
"Tobias Fell is the head of the history department. I didn't have a choice Ric sighed
heavily
"All right, that explains what you're doing here. The younger Gilbert emphasized in
annoyance.
"Well, I'm the one who can fail you if you don't help me out" Ric smirked at him as the
huntress chuckled. "CJ is here because I asked her to be."
"I have nothing better to do. I don't work today. Which sucks. The female grumbled
displeased.
Just then Elena joined them. "Hey, sorry I'm late. What did I miss?"
"You didn't miss anything." Jeremy responded and they went back to listening to the
Tobias Fell, who was giving his speech.
"The first illumination was held in celebration with the newfound prosperity that Mystic Falls enjoyed after the war. Tobias addressed the crowd and suddenly Jeremy
laughed.
Elena looked at him in confusion, "What's so funny?"
Jeremy didn't response just looked at the stage so she turned her head to listen to the speech. "The founders, they placed lanterns over the doors to indicate that it was safe for their neighbors to come outside again. That night was an opportunity for the
community of Mystic Falls to come together, a chance to strengthen ties with Suddenly, Jeremy smiled at an empty space and Carter exchanged an odd look with
neighbors, business owners, and the
Ric before walking away. The huntress came across Caroline, who was helping Bonnie
with hanging the lanterns from trees "So when you did the spell to send Vicki away, did that get rid of Anna, too?" The
blonde vampire questioned interested.
Bonnie sighed in disappointment. "I wish. All I did was block the magic that was
helping Vicki get a physical foothold here. Jeremy's still got a direct line to the other
side, and as long as he wants to see Anna and she wants to see him, she's still here." "Okay, you don't think I can actually resist commenting on that." Caroline said with a
pointed look. "Caroline. Don't Carter sternly warned in a deep tone with narrowed eyes as she
walked up to them.
"There. You commented." Bonnie said unamused. "Bonnie..." The vampire began but was interrupted
"What do you want me to say, Caroline?" The witch questioned Incredulously. "I went against the balance of nature when I brought Jeremy back to life, and now I'm paying the consequences."
"Well, I want you to say you're not okay with it." Caroline clarified kindly. "I'm a thousand times not okay with it."Bonnie admitted truthfully. "I just don't
what to do about it."
"Talk to him about it" Carter offered an idea causing Bonnie to sigh.
Then Damon pulled up near them them in his car. "Greetings, blondie. Little arrow. Witchy. I think you got your voodoo wires all crossed when you got rid of Vicki
Donovan.
Bonnie looked at him in confusion. "What do you mean, why?
"Because I'm pretty sure I just got spit-roasted by Mason Lockwood's ghost." Damon
grumbled in aggravation.
"Well, that sounds like an eventful and fun morning" Carter teasingly commented
with a small smirk.
Caroline looked at him in shock. "What?"
"And why would you think that?" Bonnie questioned defensively.
"Maybe because he chained me to a chair and shoved a hot poker in my chest. Let's just say I'm having déjà vu. He grimaced and gave her a sarcastic smile.
"Kinky..." CJ remarked in amusement causing him to glare at her.
Caroline looked over at Bonnie. "I thought you said that ghosts couldn't physically Interact with people."
"They can't." The witch said in concern.
"Yeah, well, I don't have time for a vengeful Lockwood. When I kill someone, they're
supposed to stay dead." Damon said sternly. "Whatever you screwed up, fix it." He
drove away fast with his tires squeating as Carter rolled her eyes.
"Drama queen." The huntress grumbled in annoyance.
Later on, Carter, Jeremy, Elena and Alaric were sitting outside the Mystic Grill with all of Stefan's journals placed on the table.
"Hey, Jer, I need you to help me with something." Elena said suddenly causing them
to all look at her.
"What's up?" He asked dully.
"I've been going through Stefan's old journals. Every single time that he's gone off the
rails in the past, his best friend Lexi's been the one to bring him back. The
doppelgänger explained.
"So where is she now that we need her?" Ric questioned her, unaware of Lex's death a year ago.
"She's dead." Jeremy said simply.
"Damon killed her" Carter added in a dull, bored tone as she played with the string on
one of the leather bound journals. "Shocker" She said sarcastically and made a face. Ric signed heavily as Jeremy looked at Elena. "And you want me to try to reach her,
don't you?"
"I thought if I knew how she did it, maybe I could help him." She answered him, hopeful and desperate,
"I don't even know if she's on the other side." Jeremy informed her with a shrug
"Is that what it's called?" The doppelgänger asked intrigued.
"That's what Anna calls it. There's not like an official brochure or anything." Jeremy
explained to his sister.
"So what is it, like some sort of supernatural purgatory?" Ric asked him confused
towards the concept.
Jeremy looked at him, "Well, Anna said it's like being here with all of us, only we can't see her or hear her. And she can't interact with anyone. She's all alone. He said sadly
causing CJ to narrow her eyes in suspicion
"Vicki could interact. She blew up my car." Ric grumbled in aggravation
"Vicki had help from a witch on the other side. Anna...." Jeremy paused for a moment.
"She's doing this all by herself"
"I'm just saying, maybe we learned our lesson about summoning dead people. Ric
said seriously and Carter pointed at him with a nod.
