Chapter 5: Learning the Rules

693 Words
The tunnels beneath the library seemed to stretch endlessly, and each step Alex took felt heavier than the last. Every shadow flickered unnaturally, every drip of water echoed like a heartbeat. The four of them Alex, Tyler, Emma, and Mia gathered in a small clearing near a junction where multiple passages converged. The 1993 seniors continued their endless repetitions just a few yards away, unaware of the intruders. Alex wiped sweat from his forehead, even though the air was cold and damp. “We need a plan,” he said quietly. “We can’t just follow them blindly. We need to observe, document, and understand before we do anything.” Mia clutched the yearbook tighter, flipping through the pages again. “I’ve been keeping notes,” she said nervously. “It’s all here the clubs, the sports, even the last week of school. Every detail that could matter.” Emma crossed her arms. “Yeah, but observing is one thing. We need to know the rules. What happens if we touch them? Talk to them? Change anything?” Tyler scowled. “You mean… mess with the loop? We could” He stopped mid-sentence as a faint whisper ran along the walls: “Leave… or join…” Alex swallowed hard. “Exactly. That’s what I’m worried about. The entity is testing us. It’s feeding on their repetition, but it knows we’re here now. Any interference could trigger… something worse.” Mia pointed at one of the seniors, a football player tossing a ball to a friend. “Notice anything?” Alex squinted. “Look at how precise everything is. Every motion, every step… it’s like a clock. And yet, sometimes the shadows lag. Or reflections don’t match. Those are cracks in the loop. That’s our opportunity.” Emma knelt, shining her flashlight over the damp floor. “So we’re basically… shadows ourselves. Move carefully, stay out of their line of sight, and observe the differences?” “Yes,” Alex said. “And when the time comes, we lead them. Not force them, not push them. The loop is fragile. It only breaks if we follow the sequence exactly, down to the last step.” Tyler groaned. “And what’s the sequence? How do we know what to do?” Alex held up the yearbook. “That’s why Mia brought it. Every detail matters the clubs they went to, the classrooms they visited, the bus they took that night. Greenwood Creek. We follow that sequence. Recreate the night. Only then does the Silent Year end.” Mia nodded, determination flickering in her eyes. “And the entity… it’s going to resist, right? Shadows, whispers, maybe even the seniors themselves?” Alex shivered. “Exactly. The entity doesn’t want the loop broken. It will test us, push us, maybe even try to trap one of us in place of the seniors. But we have to keep calm. Document everything. Learn the rules of repetition. Timing is everything.” Emma’s flashlight flickered, revealing a shadow moving faster than it should, darting across the tunnel wall. The group froze. Whispers filled the air again: “Don’t interfere… stay or join…” Alex exhaled slowly. “That’s our warning. But we’re not leaving. The Silent Year has lasted twenty years too long. These kids our seniors deserve to live. We’re going to figure it out. And if the loop is broken… we stop it tonight, at Greenwood Creek.” Tyler rubbed his hands together, finally committing. “Fine. I’m in. But if the entity tries anything… we fight back. We’re not becoming part of their day.” Mia smiled faintly, though fear lingered in her eyes. “Then let’s start mapping everything. Every detail counts. Every step. Every minute. If we fail… we could be next.” Alex nodded, heart pounding. The entity’s whispers grew louder as the cracks in the loop became more apparent. Somewhere ahead, the 1993 seniors continued their endless day, repeating the moments they didn’t even know had been stolen. And for the first time, Alex realized the Silent Year wasn’t just a story. It was a trap, and they had just stepped inside.
