Chapter 84

1015 Words

(Samuel's POV) The receptionist answers. I book the earliest available appointment, which is Thursday at two o'clock. I give my name and my credit card details and I hang up. I look at the bourbon glass. I know why I'm booking the appointment. I'm not going to lie to myself about it — not in the privacy of my own apartment, where there's no one to perform for. I'm not booking it because I think I need help, or because I've had some reckoning with the kind of man I've been, or because my therapist's couch is where genuine transformation begins. I'm booking it because changed men go to therapy. And I need Caroline to see a changed man. And the court? A certificate to change their about Charlie's custody. Reeves calls back thirty-six hours later. "I'm outside your building," he says.
