(Caroline's POV)
I'm in the middle of editing a particularly tricky picture book manuscript—the author keeps using vocabulary that's way too advanced for the target age range—when my phone rings.
Meadowbrook Kindergarten.
My heart jumps into my throat. Is Charlie okay? Did he have a meltdown? Did something happen with another child?
"Hello?"
"Caroline, it's Louise. Everything is fine—Charlie's fine—but I need you to come in a bit early today if you can. There's something I need to show you."
"Is he hurt?"
"No, nothing like that. He's perfectly fine. It's just... it's hard to explain over the phone. Can you come?"
I glance at the clock. It's only two. I'm not supposed to pick up Charlie until three-thirty.
