Chapter 5: The Deal

[Xander's POV] “Sign it, Xander,” the figure repeated, his voice now a dark promise, laced with an edge of threat. I couldn't see the contract in front of me, but I felt its presence in the air—heavy, suffocating. Every word Callie read to me echoed in my mind, and the tension in the room seemed to tighten with each passing second. I had to make a choice, but it wasn't as simple as signing my name. Not when it felt like everything I had built was teetering on the edge. "Read it again, Callie," I said, my voice firm but betraying my unease. Callie's voice was steady as she began reading the terms again. "This contract outlines the terms for a partnership between GrayTech and TitanTech, with the goal of developing the largest and most advanced AI model ever created. TitanTech will provide the infrastructure, and GrayTech will contribute cutting-edge algorithms, along with exclusive rights to the model's use for the next twenty years." She paused, and I could sense the uncertainty in the silence. "There's a clause here," she continued, "that allows TitanTech to take full control of the AI once it reaches a certain milestone in development. They also gain veto power over any major decisions related to its application, including market use and deployment." I felt my pulse quicken as the weight of those words sunk in. TitanTech would essentially control the very future of this groundbreaking AI—an AI that could change the world. My company, my future, was tied to it. But at what cost? "Go on," I urged, already knowing there was more. Callie took a deep breath, and her voice became quieter. "There's also a non-compete clause for both companies once the AI is launched. No one else can touch this level of technology for at least ten years. In essence, TitanTech will hold a monopoly on this new AI sector, with GrayTech as their partner." I clenched my jaw, feeling a surge of anger and frustration. I had always believed in GrayTech's independence, in making our own breakthroughs, not letting someone else pull the strings. But this deal—this partnership—was what we needed to secure our place in the future of technology. The competition was fierce, and TitanTech was the best in the field. They had the resources to push us further than we could go alone. "I'm not sure about this," I muttered, the contract suddenly feeling like a trap. "Xander," Callie said gently, "this deal could skyrocket GrayTech's value. We could build something monumental together. But I can't make this decision for you." I remained silent, the weight of my decision pressing harder. I had always trusted Callie's judgment, and she was right. This partnership could propel GrayTech into the stratosphere. But it could also tie us down, handcuffing us to TitanTech's whims. It felt like a gamble, one that could make or break everything. Before I could respond, I heard a cold voice cutting through the tension. "You don't get to decide this, Xander." I knew that voice. Sophia. Her fury was palpable, even in the space between us. The air seemed to shift, the storm I had sensed earlier turning into a full-blown thunderhead. I didn't need to see her to know she was standing there, her anger so thick it practically crackled in the air. “You're just going to sign away GrayTech's future like that?” she demanded. “You really think TitanTech has your best interests at heart?” I stood my ground, despite the growing pressure. “Sophia, this isn't your decision,” I said, my voice unwavering. “This partnership is the future. It's what GrayTech needs to stay relevant.” Her voice turned icy. "Relevant? Or controlled? You're signing over everything, Xander. You won't have the power to make your own moves anymore. TitanTech will own you.” I could feel the anger radiating off her, and yet I remained still, hearing the underlying concern in her voice. But I knew I couldn't back down now. Too much was at stake. "You've already crossed the line," Sophia spat, her words sharp and bitter. "This isn't just a business move anymore. This is about losing your soul. You think you're securing GrayTech's future? You're setting it up for failure. TitanTech will swallow you whole." Her words stung, but I wasn't backing down. The figure in front of me, the one who'd been silently watching us, spoke up once more, his voice low and taunting. "Don't let her stop you, Xander. Sign the contract, and this all ends. No more distractions. No more games." I could feel the pressure building, my heart pounding in my chest. The choice was mine. But just as I reached for the pen, Sophia's fury erupted. She lunged, faster than I expected, trying to tear the papers from my hand, her body a blur of motion. Max, my ever-vigilant bodyguard, was there in an instant. He moved between us with lightning speed, grabbing Sophia's wrists and pulling her back with ease. “Get off me!” she snarled, her breath coming in short, furious bursts. She twisted in his grip, trying to break free, but Max's hold was like iron. “Enough, Sophia,” Max said, his voice calm but unyielding. "This isn't the way to handle this." But Sophia didn't hear him. Her eyes were wild, filled with pure rage. "You think you've won, Xander?" she spat. "This isn't over. You've made a powerful enemy tonight." I stood there, pen in hand, not moving as the storm raged between us. “Sophia,” I said, voice steady, “this deal is mine now. It's the future, whether you like it or not.” She only shot me a look of pure contempt. “You'll regret this,” she said, her voice low and dangerous. “I'll make sure of it.” With one final, venomous glare, she twisted away from Max and stormed out of the room, her heels clicking sharply against the floor as she disappeared into the night. I watched her go, feeling the weight of her words sink into me. I couldn't let her stop me—not now, not when the deal was within reach. I took a deep breath and, with steady hands, signed the contract. It was done. But as I set the pen down, my heart still racing, I couldn't shake the feeling that Sophia's warning wasn't empty. She was right about one thing. This wasn't over. Just as I tried to steady myself, my phone buzzed on the table. The message on the screen made my blood run cold from an unknown sender: “You've made your move, Xander. Now prepare for mine. - S.”
