Chapter 10

3201 Words

10 David sent me the quote for having his crew help me plant everything in the garden, and I nearly choked on the number. Not because the guys weren’t worth it, but because it was almost as big of a number as we were spending for the plants themselves. There was no way Gina could afford to pay that. And no way I could cover it and not tell her. I spent the evening trying to come up with options and feeling like a failure for taking on the project without a better idea of what it would take. I was constantly jumping to help Gina. I’d done it forever. I was sure a shrink would say it was my misguided attempt to win Zoey back, using her aunt as a proxy for the woman I loved and hoping it would get back to Zoey that I was around and reliable and took care of anything that needed to be done.
