The First Spark

The book sat exactly where Kai Draven had left it—on the counter, its ancient pages still whispering, the ink shifting in ways that defied logic. Lila Hart wasn’t sure how long she stood there, staring at it. Her mind kept replaying the moment their hands had touched, the sharp jolt that had rushed through her veins like wildfire. It wasn’t normal. None of this was. And yet, she couldn’t ignore the way it called her—the same way he had. Her fingers trembled slightly as she reached for it. The leather cover was cool under her touch, humming faintly, as if the book itself was alive. She hesitated momentarily before flipping it open to the page Kai had last touched. The ink bled across the parchment, swirling like smoke caught in a windless room. Symbols twisted into shapes she almost recognized, flickering before settling into words she shouldn’t have been able to read. But she could. And that terrified her. The past is never truly buried. What was lost will always find its way back. A chill snaked down her spine. A sharp knock at the door nearly sent her heart through her ribs. She snapped the book shut, pressing it against her chest as she turned toward the entrance. The store was closed. No one should have been here this late—except… Kai. Her pulse quickened as she stepped forward, peering through the glass. But it wasn’t Kai. A man stood just outside, his coat drenched from the rain, dark eyes scanning the store like he was searching for something—or someone. Lila’s stomach tightened. He looked… wrong. His face was smooth, too smooth—like someone had sculpted human features onto something that didn’t quite belong in this world. And then, just for a fraction of a second, his eyes flickered black. Lila stumbled backward. No. No, she had imagined that. It was a trick of the light. A trick of exhaustion. But deep down, she knew better. The man tilted his head slightly, a slow, deliberate motion, as if he could sense her watching. Then, without knocking again, he turned and disappeared into the rain. Lila didn’t breathe until he was gone. Her hands clenched around the book, heart still hammering. She had no idea what the hell was happening, but one thing was clear— She needed to find Kai. 🔥 Scene Break – The Second Encounter 🔥 The air inside The Hollow Moon—a bar tucked between two abandoned buildings on the city’s edge—was thick with the scent of whiskey and low-burning candlewax. Shadows clung to the corners, the dim lighting barely cutting through the murky atmosphere. Lila hadn’t meant to come here. But somehow, her feet had led her straight to the place where instinct told her Kai would be. And she had been right. He was seated in the back, a glass of dark amber liquid in his hand, posture effortless yet commanding. Unlike before, his black coat was gone, leaving the dark shirt beneath unbuttoned just enough to reveal the faintest hint of inked symbols along his collarbone. Her throat went dry. Kai Draven looked like he belonged in a place like this. Like the shadows answered to him. And maybe they did. His gaze flicked up the second she stepped inside, pinning her in place. He hadn’t even turned fully toward her, but it didn’t matter. The weight of his attention was enough to make her forget why she had come here in the first place. But then she remembered the man with the black eyes. The book. The feeling that something was wrong. Lila forced herself forward, weaving between tables until she stood before him. Kai didn’t speak. He simply took a slow sip of his drink, his gaze never leaving hers. “You knew,” she said, voice lower than she intended. “Didn’t you?” Kai’s lips quirked slightly, but there was no amusement in his expression. “Knew what?” Her fingers curled into fists. “That something was… watching me.” He set his glass down. “Did you see it?” Lila exhaled sharply. “It wasn’t human, was it?” Kai’s silence was answer enough. Her pulse quickened. “What the hell is going on?” Instead of answering, Kai rose from his seat in one fluid movement. He was taller than she remembered, his presence even more suffocating in the dim lighting of the bar. He stepped closer, and though every instinct screamed at her to step back—she didn’t. His voice was low, dangerously quiet. “You shouldn’t have come here, Lila.” Her breath hitched. And then his fingers brushed against her wrist—light as a whisper, yet searing against her skin. A jolt ripped through her veins, just like before. But this time, something else stirred within her. Something ancient. Something hungry. Kai’s jaw tightened. He felt it, too. His fingers lingered a second too long before he stepped back, exhaling through his nose. “You need to leave.” Lila swallowed. “Not until you tell me what’s happening.” Kai hesitated, something flickering behind his eyes—not just frustration, but something deeper. Something desperate. He glanced around the bar, then back at her. “Fine.” Then, before she could react, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the exit. Lila barely had time to process the heat of his touch before they were outside, the air thick with the scent of rain. The city around them felt too quiet, as if the world itself had paused. Kai let go of her just as abruptly as he had grabbed her. “Listen to me,” he said, voice sharper now. “That man you saw? He wasn’t just looking for you.” Lila shivered. “Then what was he doing?” Kai’s expression darkened. “Hunting.” She inhaled sharply. Hunting who? Before she could ask, Kai stepped closer, his presence demanding her full attention. “You don’t realize what you are, Lila.” His voice was lower now, quieter. “But they do.” She didn’t understand. None of this made sense. But deep in her bones, she knew one thing: She wasn’t ready to hear the truth. And yet—she needed to. Lila squared her shoulders, tilting her chin up despite the way her body trembled. “Then tell me.” Kai watched her, something unreadable flickering through his storm-gray eyes. Then, finally— “I will.” But the way he said it sent a shiver through her. Because it sounded less like a promise. And more like a warning.
