Chapter 3: Let's Do a DNA Test Less than ten minutes after Holt Deep gave the order, several people who looked like doctors, dressed in white lab coats and wearing light blue masks, appeared in Lia Shimmer's apartment. They looked very professional. The lead doctor was an older man who seemed quite distinguished. He took hair samples from Lia, Holt, and the little boy, marked and stored them, and then left. This is the most straightforward way, Lia thought. If they want a DNA test, fine. She wasn't the boy's mother. As the saying goes, true gold fears no fire. She didn't believe that her "worthless stone" could be mistaken for gold. Two days later, Lia stood in front of the Shangyi Company building, dressed in formal work attire and holding a stack of her design portfolios. “Mommy, Shangyi Company is hiring designers. You should apply there. Maybe you'll have an amazing adventure,” the little boy had said seriously before leaving. Lia felt ridiculous for actually believing a child's words and coming to apply at Shangyi Company. Before coming here, Lia had done some research online. Shangyi Company was a recently established decoration firm that had been growing rapidly in S City. They had just gone public and spent tens of millions on infrastructure and publicity. Since the company was brand new, there were many job openings, especially for designers. Lia hadn't been very confident at first. A big company like this would surely have high standards for its employees. She didn't have a diploma and was still carrying the stigma of plagiarism. But their job posting said something like, "We don't care about your background. If your designs are good, even with just a high school diploma, we'll hire you." This piqued Lia's interest. She quickly gathered her old design portfolios and rushed to apply. “Miss Lia, we are very impressed with your work. If there are no issues, we can discuss the contract details right away,” the general manager of Shangyi Company said after reviewing her portfolios. He couldn't wait to sign her on as an employee. “Our company is newly established but backed by a large financial group. The future looks promising. We are especially in need of designers and department managers. It would be great if you could join us.” “Really?” Lia couldn't believe her ears. She had been rejected so many times before. This sudden success was hard to take in. At that moment, a secretary walked in and whispered something into the general manager's ear. His expression changed. “Miss Shen? Which Miss Shen?” The secretary glanced at Lia, seeming a bit intimidated. Although she spoke in a low voice, Lia still caught it: the famous fashion designer, Miss Sharon Frost. Lia had known that Sharon wouldn't let her go easily, but she hadn't expected her to be so fast. As soon as Lia applied, Sharon was already on her trail. “So I didn't expect to see you here. What are you doing here? Applying for a janitorial position? Cleaning for others?” Two years had passed, and the once poor and dowdy girl from the countryside had transformed into a high-end international designer, dressed in designer brands, looking like a fashionable socialite. Seeing Lia at Shangyi Company, Sharon's face was full of mockery. She sat in the company's conference room, ignoring the people around her who were flattering her, and focused on admiring her blood-red nails. Lia forced down her anger and explained, “I'm here to apply for the designer position.” Seeing that Lia still wanted to be a designer, Sharon's expression changed slightly. She sneered, “You, a cancer in the industry, have no real talent and only know how to plagiarize others' work. What makes you think you can call yourself a designer?” The design industry, which Lia had always loved and considered her life, was now being ridiculed by the very person who had plagiarized her work... Lia had a good temper, but she was not someone to be pushed around: “Who's the real cancer in the industry? We both know who plagiarized whose work. One day, I'll return those words to you, word for word.” As she spoke, people in the Shangyi Company began to murmur, pointing and whispering about Sharon and Lia, their eyes filled with suspicion and doubt. Seeing that even they were starting to question her, Sharon became furious and shouted, “Lia Shimmer, are you too cowardly to admit your actions? I treated you like a good friend, and you plagiarized my work and tried to seduce my husband...” Hearing this, Lia was almost amused by the audacity. She finally understood what it meant to be falsely accused. Just as she was about to retort, a childish voice came from behind: “My mom didn't plagiarize! You're the one who copied her work and then falsely accused her!” Recognizing the voice, Lia instinctively turned around and saw the little boy standing at the door, glaring at Sharon with anger. She was surprised: “How did you get here?” Initially, Sharon was a bit flustered when someone exposed her past plagiarism and false accusations against Lia. But seeing that it was just a child, and hearing him call Lia "mom," her panic quickly turned into contemptuous mockery: “Oh, so you've had a child. If I remember correctly, Shimmer, you're not married, right? I wonder who the father is. Could this be some illegitimate child you had with a random man?” “Try saying that again,” Lia warned, her patience wearing thin. Adult disputes should never involve children. No matter what grievances Lia had with Sharon, or how much Sharon mocked her, Lia could remain calm. But when it came to the little boy, especially being called an "illegitimate child," Lia could not tolerate it. “Is that not the case?” Sharon pressed, feeling she had the upper hand: “Shimmer, you were always a man-chaser in school, mixing around with different guys. As your so-called good friend, I shouldn't expose your dirty laundry, but if I don't reveal your true nature here, how many more people will you deceive? As a department manager of this company, I can't just stand by and let a plagiarist join our team.” Sharon's words were full of holes, but Lia was more surprised by the last part: “You're the department manager here?” Sharon looked smug: “How pitiful. You're struggling here for an interview, while I can just make a phone call and become a department manager. That's the difference between us.” “Is that so?” Lia responded coolly. “Then I feel sorry for this company for hiring someone like you. I almost forgot what you used to be like. Need me to remind you?” Despite Sharon's current glamorous appearance, she came from a rural village. She was always ashamed of her background and tried to hide it in college. She would compete with classmates by buying designer clothes and cosmetics, and when she ran out of money, she would date wealthy men. At S University, everyone knew that for a few thousand dollars, you could go on a date with Sharon. Lia remembered one summer when Sharon's parents and younger brother came to visit her after a long journey by train. They brought her local specialties from their hometown, but Sharon avoided them. When her parents found her, she threw a tantrum, feeling embarrassed by their presence. In front of them, she threw the gifts they brought into the trash. Lia had no prejudice against Sharon's background. She just despised people who disowned their parents and used men for money. Seeing Lia bring up her past, Sharon's face turned ugly. She pointed at Lia and shouted, “No one will believe you! You're just jealous of me and trying to frame me for plagiarism!” Then she grabbed the general manager of Shangyi Company: “Manager, this person plagiarized my work in a competition and was expelled from school. How can someone like this be allowed into the company? Get her and this illegitimate child out of here!” As soon as she finished speaking, a cold voice came from behind: “Who did you call an illegitimate child?”
