Chapter 8 She Chose to Disappear Forever

621 Words
Selene wiped the blood from her lips in a daze, her breathing tight. She walked into the living room, her expression numb as she was held down. A thick needle pierced her skin, and a cold liquid was injected into her body. Hours passed. The entire trial left her physically and mentally exhausted, to the point that she no longer had the strength to speak. When she left, the housekeeper handed her the money. Adrian never appeared again. Selene took the money and went to the hospital. She did not expect to run into Vivian there. Vivian blocked her path to the cardiology department, her eyes filled with provocation and smug satisfaction. "You heard everything last night, didn't you? Adrian was willing to throw you out for me. That means I'm the most important person to him now. You're nothing more than a tool for testing medication." As she spoke, she deliberately exposed her neck, faint marks visible against her skin. Selene's gaze fell on those marks. Pain stabbed into her chest. But in the end, she said nothing, only lowering her eyes as her body trembled slightly. "Mm. I won't appear again." Vivian frowned, stepping forward to grab Selene's hand tightly, her nails digging into her skin. "You'd better keep your word. Otherwise, I'll make your life worse than death." Selene barely registered the movement of Vivian's lips. Her heart was hurting more and more. Suddenly, everything went black. She collapsed straight to the ground. Vivian looked at her in panic, then hurriedly turned and left the hospital. In her fading consciousness, Selene was pushed into the operating room. Memories flashed through her mind like a flickering reel. Every single one of them was about Adrian. At eighteen, Adrian had been shy and inexperienced. His handsome face flushed red as he confessed to her, nervous yet sincere. "Selene, I'll love you more than my own life." At nineteen, he had stayed up all night in the kitchen, cooking just to make sure she could eat while burning with fever. At twenty, when the car accident struck without warning, he had shielded her in his arms without hesitation. He ended up with several broken ribs, yet he still smiled and wiped away her tears. "Selene, don't be afraid." ****** "You're finally awake! Do you have any idea how close you were to dying?" Ryan looked at Selene lying weakly in the hospital bed. In the end, he could not hide his concern. He frowned, hesitated, then finally asked, "You had your reasons back then. Why didn't you explain it to Adrian? And besides… it's not like he didn't care about you. When you were drugged that time, it was actually…" Before he could finish, Selene interrupted him softly. "Ryan, I've already contacted my mother's organization. They'll arrange a fake death for me. There will be a fire. I'll disappear during the chaos and go to the border to carry on her work. Right now, I'm already someone who's about to die. So I can't tell him. Do you understand?" Her voice was low and soft, like something that could slip away at any moment. After walking so close to death, Selene thought of those memories with Adrian and realized she no longer had the courage to gamble. She had already abandoned him once. She could not do it a second time. Besides, he had already married Vivian. They loved each other. There was no reason for her to destroy their happiness. A he saw the redness in her eyes, all of Ryan's words of persuasion caught in his throat. In the end, he could only sigh and pat her shoulder. "When will the fake death be arranged?" "Three days from now."
