CHAPTER FOUR Twelve Years Ago She watched the dog from a distance. Had it caught her scent? She couldn’t know. She hadn’t seen any other kids today. That was odd. Usually, there were a few others who walked this same section of the dump. They could have died. It wasn’t out of the ordinary. The dump was a place of hard living, fighting for food, and always trying to stay warm at night. She pulled her handmade dagger out of her belt just in case. She looked it over, making sure it was sharp enough to puncture flesh if she had to fight. She had made it out of a bone she found.
