CHAPTER SEVEN Twelve Years Ago Jovanna followed Danica to the first safe area, a small cave dug into the trash. She didn’t see any of the other kids now. They all ran in different directions. She could hear the dogs barking not too far behind them. “We won’t be able to fend them off here,” Jovanna said as Danica was started to climb through the entrance. “The opening is too big. We need somewhere that only one dog can come in at a time if they find us.” Danica hesitated. She was scared and just wanted to hide. Jovanna didn’t fault her for that. But they had to be smart about it. If you didn’t think smart, you didn’t live long. Jovanna grabbed Danica’s hand and pulled her out of the cave, dragging the younger girl behind her.
