I finish up charting and head to clock out when I see a Jeep sitting outside of the ER doors. Miles. It’s him. What is he doing here? He had to have seen my note on the door.
Before I make it outside, he hops out of his car and walks through the doors. I’m stunned that he would even come inside. Is something wrong? Is he hurt? He’s dressed in a suit and tie. And when he reaches me at the front desk his smile isn’t just his normal grin.
Miles doesn’t say anything to me. He just has his hand out expecting me to take it. I want to look at him in his eyes and walk right out those doors like he didn’t matter to me. I don’t like games, but it seems like we’re always playing them. I put my pride aside and take his hand. What is going on?
Neither of us speak as he opens the door for me and helps me climb inside. What if he’s taking me out to the woods to kill me? He’s been acting so weird these last two days. I don’t even know him. He hops into the drivers side and puts his arm on the center console and flashes a big smile at me. His teeth are so white and perfectly straight. Why have I never noticed that?
We start driving, and I have no idea what’s going on. He still hasn’t spoken a word and since he hasn’t, I won’t be the first one to. We reach a windy road and looks like we’re going down into the woods. Oh great, looks like I am dying tonight. After about ten minutes of driving we reach the river. The famously beautiful Skylight River.
The path down to the river is lit up with stars between the trees and i notice there’s a blanket, candles, and a picnic basket set up right along the bank. He’s taking me on a picnic beneath the stars. This is almost breathtaking.
Miles helps me to the blanket on the ground which is surprisingly comfortable. He opens a bottle of wine and pours me a glass. I’m so glad this is Moscato and not a red wine. I take a sip and smile at him. “You have really outdone yourself Mister Miles James.” He laughs and pours himself a glass. “I really wanted to make it up to you. I know I’ve been acting weird, but I wanted a chance to explain what’s going on.”
I’m nervous because this man is full of secrets, he makes love like an animal, and at times his actions don’t match his words. I take a deep breath before saying anything and i take another drink of my wine. This time it isn’t a sip, more like a gulp. “Okay..” I say eerily. “I have something’s I haven’t quite told you about, but I wanted to make sure this is something that could become something more serious. I have very strong feelings for you and i haven’t felt this way before for anyone.” He pauses for a second waiting for my reply, but truth is I don’t want to answer his question until he’s honest with me.
“I told you I come from a very religious family. And it’s true..mostly. I’m forbidden to be in relations with anyone who doesn’t share the same “religion” as them. If my family finds out I will be brutally murdered.” Wait, what? Murdered? For being in a relationship???? I gasp trying to make sure what I heard was correct. “What kind of f****d up family or religion do you come from? I have never in my life heard of something as crazy as murdering their own blood over being in a relationship or having s*x with someone who doesn’t share the same beliefs as you. You’re going to have to explain a little more than just that…”
He’s staring into my soul. He’s searching for the right answers but i don’t think there are any. I try to relax and hear him out, but so far everything he’s said is complete ludicrous. He takes a deep breath and in one swift breath he exhaled the words “imawerewolf.” Hold up, what did i just hear? Am I dreaming right now? I have the most confused look on my face so he repeats himself only this time he says it slower, “I’m a werewolf.” I don’t believe this s**t. What the f**k kind of excuse is that?
I stand up, dust myself off and start to walk away when I hear the snapping of bones. I’m too scared to turn around. I hear a growling noise. The same noise i heard when he was supposed to be moaning in my ear. I slowly turn around trying not to pass out and there he is, covered in a grey and white coat, the same blue eyes and bushy eyebrows. It can’t be. This doesn’t make any sense.
I want to run away. I want to scream, but I’m scared to the point of not even being able to blink. I try to just focus on what I’m seeing and my breathing. I feel as if my mind is playing tricks on me. How can this be happening? I’m finally able to blink and when i do, his body is back to normal. In the blink of an eye.
“Please don’t run, please don’t scream and please don’t be scared of me. I will not hurt you. I had to show you because you were walking away. I don’t want you to leave. I just had to show you, please. Please. Please let me explain.” He’s completely naked. His suit and tie are in shreds. I still haven’t spoken a word. I’m in shock.
I take a minute or two to reflect on what had just happened. He’s waiting on me. His eyes look hopeful that I can accept him for him, but I’m not sure I can. His eyes have a small tear in them that looks like it’s about to fall against his cheek. I still don’t speak. I can’t even think right now.
I take a step towards him, he hasn’t even covered his nakedness. He’s showing me all of him. His deep v-line is staring back at me. I feel a rush of heat between us. I don’t know how it’s possible, but my appeal for him has gotten stronger. I take another step, and reach out to him. He lays his head into my shoulder with his head looking down. I wrap my arms around him and hold him tightly. He’s embarrassed and i can feel his disappointment slowly drift away.
We haven’t uttered a word. He leans his head up and plants a soothing kiss across my lips. The kiss moves through my whole body. We stop, but only for a second, and make our way back to our candle lit picnic. The river is sparkling from the star lights shine. I mutter, “I accept you for you.” That was the end of our conversation for the night. We make love until the sun comes up hopeful for what tomorrow brings.
