16 Caden followed Mina into the castle, ducking into doorways and side passages as they passed by servants who were still working. He wasn’t wearing his armor, and it was dark, but he didn’t want to take any chances. If someone recognized him and informed Captain Eduard, or worse—Lord Klodian—he’d surely be lashed again. While the wounds would heal, the pain wasn’t something he relished. After traversing numerous maze-like halls, he was growing worried. “How much further?” he whispered. “Not much. It’s just around the corner now. Stay here and let me make sure it’s clear.” Mina disappeared from sight and he glanced back the way they’d come.
