Mina sat on the ground with her legs crossed, staring up at Copper as he related the events of the past. His words swirled around her, creating images within her mind as if she had been there herself.
In those days, the relationship between humans and dragons was much different than it is today. We were allies, friends even. Dragon and man were bonded closely, sharing their minds.
Truly? Mina asked.
Truly? Indeed.
I’ve never heard that before. Until I met you, I always thought dragons were mindless animals.
There’s a good reason for that.

Copper growled, a rumbling sound that resonated from deep in his chest. Mina felt the ground tremble beneath her.
There are some things better left forgotten, he said. And yet, there is a reason we met that day inside the mesa.
