20 Caden was confused. “Dead? How?” “He succumbed to his wounds not long ago.” Burke had been wounded, but he didn’t think the wound hadn’t been life-threatening. He watched as the healers lifted the captain’s body off the bed and onto a stretcher, then they carried him out of the infirmary. The host of healers dispersed, and Caden stood alone staring at the empty bed. Something wasn’t right. Burke had been fine earlier. He walked over to the bed and noticed a piece of parchment sticking out from under the pillow. Scrawled roughly on it was written the words: Don’t trust anyone. He crumpled the paper and looked around the infirmary. If Burke had been killed, it was probably at Lord D’Lance’s command. At least, that was his suspicion. Perhaps his mind was clouded by Burke’s words … b
