Chapter 5 The Envelope He Never Opened

695 Words
The street outside the café glistened under the streetlights, raindrops clinging to tree leaves like tiny crystals. Arjun stood still, the unopened envelope in his hand feeling heavier than any architectural model he had ever carried. He stared at the handwriting on the front. A name. A name he had spent years trying not to think about. His fingers trembled around the flap, but even now… He couldn’t open it. Not yet. Maybe not ever. He shoved it back into his coat quickly, as if afraid it would burn him if he held it longer. --- Inside the Café Meera sat quietly after Arjun left, her fingers tracing circles on her teacup. Tara watched her with soft concern now—her teasing gone. “Meera.” Meera didn’t answer. Tara leaned closer. “You like him.” Meera’s eyes softened. “It’s not that simple.” “Romance never is,” Tara shrugged. “But something about him… it scares him. And you noticed it.” Meera looked at the door Arjun had walked through minutes ago. She had seen something broken, something tender, something tied to a painful memory. And she didn’t even know his last name. Meera whispered, “Tara, what if he’s dealing with something serious? Something he doesn’t talk about?” “Then maybe,” Tara said, squeezing her hand, “it matters that you listened.” --- Across the City – Arjun’s Apartment Arjun unlocked his apartment door and dropped his things on the floor. Kabir was already inside, lounging on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn. “You look like you saw a ghost,” Kabir said casually. Arjun didn’t reply. Kabir sat up, serious now. “Arjun?” Arjun pulled the envelope out and tossed it on the coffee table. Kabir’s face drained of color. “Is that—?” “Yes.” Kabir swallowed hard. “Where did you find it?” “In my old things,” Arjun muttered. “It must’ve been tucked in a bag I brought from the storage unit.” Kabir picked up the envelope carefully. “It’s been years.” “I know.” “Are you going to open it this time?” Arjun didn’t answer. Kabir studied him quietly. “You’ve built so much, Arjun. Your career, your life. But this one thing… you still run from it.” Arjun’s voice cracked. “Because every time I try to face it, it feels like I’m drowning.” Kabir placed the envelope gently back on the table. “Maybe,” he said softly, “you met someone today who could be your lifeline.” Arjun froze. Kabir smirked knowingly. “Don’t look shocked. I know that face. You met someone, didn’t you?” Arjun didn’t deny it. Kabir leaned back, smiling to himself. “Does she have a name?” Arjun closed his eyes. “Meera.” Kabir repeated it thoughtfully. “Meera.” Arjun sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “She saw something in me today… something I try not to show.” “And did that scare you?” Kabir asked gently. “Yes.” “And did it also… feel good?” Arjun didn’t speak. But Kabir saw the answer in his silence. --- Later That Night – Meera’s Room Meera downloaded Arjun’s photograph onto her computer. She zoomed in slightly. His eyes told a story she wanted to understand. A story he wasn’t ready to share. She pressed a hand to her chest. Why did a stranger feel so familiar? She clicked SAVE and whispered into the quiet room: “Arjun Dev.” The name settled on her tongue like it belonged there. --- On the Other Side of the City Arjun sat on his bed, the envelope beside him like a ghost. He ran a hand through his hair. For the first time in years, something inside him shifted—just a little. A possibility. A warmth. A reason to breathe differently. And when he closed his eyes… He saw Meera standing in the rain, camera in hand, looking at him like he wasn’t broken. Like he could be whole. ---
