Lyra Damon didn't see this coming. He thought he had victory in the bag and he would have if we hadn't been ready. The forest waited like a held breath. Every branch, every stone, every blade of grass carried a thread of my magic. I had woven them together into a net no eye could see, a living snare that stretched wide across the battlefield. From where I stood, cloaked by shadow and silence, I could feel it humming beneath my skin. They were coming. The first murmur of boots reached me long before they appeared. Leo’s men led, disciplined and eager for blood. Damon’s presence followed like a shadow, a weight of malice pressing through the trees. He kept himself behind them, as he always did, pushing others forward into the s*******r. I knew he was a coward but I didn't yet understand
