CHAPTER TWO – THE MAN BEHIND THE CONTRACT

1544 Words
Elena had never seen a building so tall it seemed to touch the clouds. King Enterprises towered over the city in sleek black glass and steel, its mirrored surface reflecting the evening lights. People in suits streamed through the revolving doors, their steps sharp with purpose. Elena hesitated on the sidewalk, feeling out of place in her simple blouse and worn jeans. She clutched her bag tighter. What am I doing here? She stared up at the building again, nerves dancing in her chest. She wasn’t a businesswoman. She wasn’t wealthy. She wasn’t anyone who belonged inside a place like this. But she needed this opportunity, even if her legs trembled. With a shaky inhale, she stepped inside. The lobby was breathtaking: marble floors, soft gold lighting, a chandelier that sparkled like falling stars. A massive reception desk stood at the center, guarded by two sleek security officers. Elena approached the receptionist—a polished woman with perfect eyeliner and a clipped, professional smile. “H-hello,” Elena said quietly. “I’m here for a… consultation. Six PM.” The receptionist typed swiftly, eyes scanning a screen before lifting her gaze. Her polite demeanor shifted instantly to one of surprise—and respect. “Yes, Miss Elena. You’re expected.” She motioned toward a private elevator. “Take the Executive Wing lift to the top floor. Someone will meet you there.” The executive wing. The top floor. Her heart hammered harder. As she stepped into the elevator, the doors slid shut silently, sealing her inside. The ride was smooth, too smooth, the soft hum filling the heavy silence. Her reflection in the mirrored wall looked nervous, small… determined. When the doors opened, she stepped into a hallway lined with dark wood and soft lighting. A young woman in a grey suit greeted her with a warm smile. “Miss Elena? Welcome. Mr. King is finishing a meeting. Please follow me.” Mr. King? Her pulse stumbled. Was he the client? She followed the assistant past glass-walled rooms and modern artwork until they reached a large door. The assistant gestured toward a seating area. “Please wait here. He’ll be with you shortly.” Elena sat, clasping her hands. She tried to breathe steadily, but her thoughts wove into knots. What if this was a mistake? What if the client wasn’t someone kind? What if the contract was more than she expected? A deep voice cut through her spiraling thoughts. “You must be Elena Thompson.” She stood so quickly she nearly tripped. And there he was. Adrian King. He stood tall, over six feet, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that framed broad shoulders and a powerful presence. His jawline was sharp, his expression unreadable. His hair was dark and thick, styled with effortless elegance. But it was his eyes—cold, piercing grey—that captured her breath. He was intimidating. Beautiful. Unapproachable. He looked like a man used to controlling everything around him. “Elena,” she managed, her voice barely above a whisper. “Come,” he said simply. The assistant excused herself as Adrian led Elena into his private office—an enormous room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering city. Shelves of books lined one wall; modern art adorned the other. But the desk, carved from mahogany, commanded the room. Adrian stopped beside it and turned to her. “Please sit.” She sat slowly, her nerves prickling. He took a seat across from her, but even seated, he radiated dominance. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Adrian simply watched her, his gaze sharp, assessing, almost clinical. “You received the details,” he began. “I assume you understand the nature of this arrangement?” Elena nodded, though her throat was tight. “Yes. The… surrogacy.” “Good.” His expression didn’t shift. “Before we proceed, I want honesty. Complete honesty.” She swallowed. “Of course.” “Why are you considering this?” The question hit her harder than she expected. Shame, fear, and desperation tangled inside her. She looked down at her hands. “I need the money,” she whispered. “I lost my chance at school. And I might lose my apartment. I don’t have savings… or a family to fall back on.” She forced herself to meet his eyes. “And I want to help. If this is something that gives someone else a family… then I’m willing.” Adrian’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, as if her answer struck something in him. He leaned back slightly, eyes never leaving her. “You don’t seem like someone easily persuaded by money.” “I’m not,” she said softly. “But I’m out of options.” Silence. Then Adrian stood and walked to the window, hands clasped behind his back. For the first time, she sensed something unfamiliar in him—sadness. “Elena,” he said quietly, “I need this child. More than anyone realizes.” His voice dropped lower, filled with a rawness she never expected from a man like him. “Doctors told me there’s a low chance I’ll ever have a biological child without intervention. I’ve already lost… too much.” He paused, then turned toward her fully, his expression tight. “I do not want marriage. I do not want emotional attachments. I want an heir. A child who carries my blood.” The words should’ve sounded cold. But they didn’t. Instead, they carried the weight of a wound he never let anyone see. His eyes locked onto hers. “This arrangement requires trust. Discretion. And strength. Do you believe you can give that?” Elena felt her heart shift, something inside her softening. “Yes,” she whispered. “I can.” Another long silence. Then Adrian returned to the desk and opened a folder—her folder. “I’ve reviewed your application. Your medical records are exceptional. Your background check is clean. You’re healthy, emotionally stable, and you completed every requirement faster than most applicants.” She blinked. “There were others?” “Hundreds.” Her stomach dropped. “And you chose… me?” His gaze softened a fraction—barely noticeable, but enough to make her breath hitch. “You’re honest. And honesty is something I value more than anything.” Her pulse fluttered. Adrian slid a document across the table. “This is the preliminary contract. If you agree to the terms, we’ll proceed with medical evaluations and legal finalization.” She took the document with trembling hands. The compensation alone made her throat tighten. With this… her life could change completely. “You will receive the first transfer after signing,” Adrian continued. “And from that moment, you will be under my protection. My doctor, my medical team, my facilities. You won’t lack anything.” She swallowed. “And if I say no?” Adrian leaned back, expression unreadable. “Then you walk out of here with your dignity. And I continue my search.” He wasn’t pressuring her. He wasn’t manipulating her. He was giving her a choice. A real choice. She looked at him—really looked. Beneath the confidence, the strength, the wealth… was a man who had endured something painful, something life-altering. A man who needed help but didn’t know how to ask. She inhaled deeply. “Mr. King… this is a huge decision. I don’t want to rush it.” “You shouldn’t,” he replied simply. “Take your time.” He glanced at his watch. “I have another meeting in twenty minutes. But before I go… there is something you should understand.” She lifted her eyes. “This arrangement is professional,” he said calmly. “But it will involve a level of closeness. Not emotional. Physical.” His voice dropped. “There are two methods to begin the procedure. One clinical. One… natural.” Elena froze. Heat rushed to her cheeks. His gaze didn’t waver. “You will choose the method, not me. And whatever you choose, I will respect.” Her breath grew shallow. She hadn’t expected this part—not so soon. Not like this. Her hands trembled slightly. Natural conception. With him? Her stomach flipped, heart thundering at the thought. “I—I don’t know,” she whispered. “You don’t need to know today,” Adrian said softly. “But you must think about it.” He stood. She followed, unsure if her legs would hold. He walked her to the door, stopping just before opening it. “Elena,” he said, voice low, almost gentle, “you walked into this building shaking. But you held your ground. That tells me more about you than any report could.” She felt warmth spread through her chest. “If you choose this path,” he continued, “I promise you will not face it alone.” Then he opened the door. The assistant stepped forward, ready to escort Elena out. But Elena hesitated, turning back. Adrian’s grey eyes met hers once more. For the first time, they weren’t cold. They were searching. And something inside her whispered— This man will change your life. And you will change his.
