Chapter 2 – The Hunters

1092 Words
Lena’s chest still heaved as she followed Adrian through the dark warehouse, the shadows stretching like fingers across cracked concrete floors. Every step was careful, calculated, but the sense of danger never left her. “Why are they after me?” she asked, her voice trembling. Her hands shook even as she tried to focus on the warmth of Adrian’s side. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he scanned the corners of the warehouse, amber eyes glowing faintly in the darkness. “Because of your gift,” he said at last. “People like you… can’t be ignored. They want to control it.” Lena swallowed hard. “Control it? But it’s not even… I don’t even know how it works yet!” “Exactly,” Adrian said grimly. “And if they get their hands on you, they’ll figure out how. Then…” He trailed off, jaw tight. The unspoken threat hung in the air. A sudden noise—metal scraping across concrete—made Lena jump. Adrian’s body shifted instantly, predatory and tense. “Stay here,” he ordered. “I’ll check it out.” Lena wanted to protest, to insist she could help, but the words died in her throat. She had learned one thing in the last hour: Adrian was not someone to be argued with in moments like this. Moments later, he returned, a slight smirk on his face, though his eyes remained sharp. “Just a rat,” he said. But Lena wasn’t so sure. Every shadow seemed to move, every sound screamed of danger. They moved to the far end of the warehouse, and Adrian pulled open a rusted metal door. Behind it was a narrow staircase leading down into darkness. Lena’s stomach twisted. “This is where we’ll be safe for now,” Adrian said. “But we can’t stay long. They’ll find us.” “Safe?” Lena’s laugh was hollow. “How is this safe? We’re in some creepy basement!” Adrian’s smirk softened into something almost tender. “It’s safer than being out there in the streets with them hunting you.” Lena’s heart thumped in her chest. There was something about the way he said it, protective yet… alluring. She had to fight the fluttering in her stomach. Focus, she told herself. He’s a werewolf. He’s dangerous. And you’re supposed to be running from people who want to kill you. A sudden flash of light from Lena’s vision made her stumble. Images of the future crashed into her mind—Marcus Vale, tall and imposing, smirking as he watched her struggle; Adrian wounded, lying on cold concrete; shadows closing in from all directions. “I saw it,” she whispered, gripping her head. “I saw him… Marcus Vale. He’s going to come for me.” Adrian’s amber eyes darkened. “Then we make sure he doesn’t get the chance.” Lena wanted to argue, to insist she was just a normal girl, but Adrian’s hand closed over hers. It was warm, grounding, almost too powerful. “We’ll face him together,” he said. “But you have to trust me completely.” Trust him, Lena repeated silently. I don’t even know who he really is. Hours passed—or maybe minutes; Lena had lost track of time. The storm outside had worsened, rain hammering against the metal roof. They kept quiet, listening, waiting. Every noise made her flinch, every shadow a threat. Finally, Adrian spoke. “You need to understand your gift,” he said. “Visions aren’t just random flashes. They’re warnings… signs of possible futures. Some can be changed, some can’t. Your first step is learning which is which.” Lena nodded, though her mind was a whirlwind of fear and confusion. “And if I can’t?” He studied her for a long moment, eyes softening. “Then we fight anyway. Together.” The sound of boots on metal above them made Lena freeze. She looked at Adrian. His jaw tightened, ears flicking slightly—a subtle shift she almost missed. “They’re here,” he whispered. Before Lena could react, the door at the top of the stairs burst open. Two men in black suits appeared, guns drawn. Lena’s vision flared violently. She saw flashes of Adrian leaping, a gun sliding across the floor, her own hands trembling, shadows closing in… Adrian pushed her behind a pillar, his body low, growling under his breath. His movements were fluid, lethal, a blur of supernatural strength. He disarmed the nearest man in a single, smooth motion, sending the gun clattering across the concrete. Lena gasped. He’s… he’s incredible. The second man raised his weapon. Adrian’s amber eyes glowed brighter, his jaw set, and in one motion, he was on him, knocking the man off balance and pinning him against the wall. Lena’s heart pounded. Every instinct screamed both fear and exhilaration. “Lena!” Adrian barked. “Stay back!” But before she could move, she felt a tug in her chest—something pulling her, connecting her to the vision she had seen earlier. Her body moved almost on its own. She ran, not toward danger, but toward the first man who had disarmed Adrian, grabbing the gun before he could react. Time slowed. Lena aimed. Her hand shook, but she squeezed the trigger. The shot rang out. The man crumpled. Adrian’s amber eyes widened—not in anger, but in surprise. “You… you did it,” he said, voice low, a hint of awe in his tone. Lena swallowed hard. “I… I don’t even know how.” Adrian stepped closer, his presence overwhelming, amber eyes locking on hers. “You’re stronger than you think,” he murmured. “And the more you trust your visions… the more dangerous you become—for them.” A sudden sound from the stairwell made them both spin. Marcus Vale emerged from the shadows, tall, imposing, smirking as if he had anticipated every move. “Well, well,” he said smoothly. “I was hoping we’d meet sooner rather than later.” Lena froze. Fear and adrenaline coursed through her veins. Adrian’s hand found hers, squeezing gently. “Stay close,” he whispered. Marcus’s smirk widened. “You’ve got a lot to learn, little girl. And time… is running out.” Lena’s vision flashed once more—Adrian on the floor, blood pooling, Marcus smiling triumphantly, and herself… powerless. Her stomach turned. Her chest tightened. The future was coming. And she didn’t know if they could survive it.
