14 A Fiery Fairy As Alex, Madeleine, and I exited the funeral home, Alex got a call. An angry call based on the ticking muscle in Alex’s jaw and the tone of the caller. Sadly, all I could make out was wah-wah-wah. It would be lovely if my supposed super-senses would occasionally super sense. Alex said, “Understood,” pocketed his phone, and murmured, “Cornelius.” He could be frustratingly reserved in his speech, but that was minimalist even by his standards. “He wants to see us, doesn’t he?” Call it precognition or just plain old common sense, but I suspected Cornelius wanted to see us in person so he could give us a proper bawling out.
