The Performance

Emily’s POV The note was slipped into my locker between second and third period. I almost threw it away without looking. But the paper was thick and expensive, the kind of stationery only one girl in this school used. Meet me in the music room during lunch. I have information about Tyler and your uncle. I know you don't trust me. You shouldn't. But I'm not your enemy anymore. Chloe Sterling's name was signed at the bottom in neat, looping handwriting. I stared at the note until the bell rang. Every instinct told me it was a trap. Chloe had humiliated me in front of the entire school days ago. She called me a traitor. She made me cry. She told everyone I sold out Jesse for a boy who didn't even like me. And now she wanted to talk. I crumpled the note and shoved it in my pocket. But I didn't throw it away. The music room was empty when I walked in. Chloe was sitting on the piano bench, her back straight, her hands folded in her lap. Sienna was next to her, looking pale and tense. They both looked up when I entered. I stayed by the door. "You have five minutes." Chloe took a breath. When she spoke, her voice was softer than I had ever heard it. Practiced. "Tyler gave me a phone at the rally. He said it had a file on it that would destroy Daniel. He wanted me to play it at the regional dinner on Thursday." "I know about Tyler," I said. "He sent me a photo of me and Daniel under the bleachers." Chloe's eyes flickered. For just a second, something cold moved behind them. Then it was gone, replaced by that soft, pleading look. "He didn't tell me that part. But it doesn't surprise me." She pulled out a small black phone from her bag. "I opened the file he gave me. It wasn't a photo of you and Daniel. It was a scanned document. Three months old. Stamped with a notary seal." She held the phone out to me. I didn't take it. "What kind of document?" Chloe's voice trembled. It sounded real. "Illegal sports pool payoffs. Authorized by Jesse Grey. And signed off by my father." The room went silent. I looked at Sienna, who was staring at her lap, twisting her fingers together. "Your father's signature," I said slowly. "On a gambling document." "Yes." Chloe blinked rapidly, like she was fighting back tears. "If Tyler plays this at the dinner, Daniel goes down. But so does my dad. Tyler doesn't care. He just wants to destroy Daniel. My father is collateral damage." I stepped away from the door and walked closer. "Why are you telling me this?" "Because you're the only one who can help me stop him." I almost laughed. "You want my help? Three days ago you screamed at me in front of the entire school. You said I was using Jesse's tragedy for clout. You called me a traitor." Chloe pressed her lips together. Her eyes glistened. "I know. And I was wrong. I was angry and jealous and scared, and I took it out on you because you were an easy target. You didn't deserve any of that." She looked up at me, her expression so earnest it could have been painted on. "I'm not asking you to forgive me. I'm asking you to let me help you. We have the same enemy now." Sienna finally spoke. Her voice was flat, almost robotic. "Marcus is my boyfriend. Was my boyfriend. I don't know anymore." She paused, swallowing hard. "He's the one who handed Coach Miller that envelope on the loading dock. I've been pretending everything is fine, but he's involved in the gambling ring. Miller is running it. Marcus is the middleman. And Chloe's father signed the paperwork." "Your uncle planned the hit on Jesse to get Daniel's family land," Chloe added. "He edited the video to make Daniel look guilty. Tyler is just following orders. They've been controlling everything from the start." I looked at Chloe's face. Her trembling lip. Her tear-bright eyes. It was a good performance. But I was too tired and too desperate to question it. "You have the raw footage," Chloe continued, her voice gaining strength. "The push from behind. Jesse dropping his stick. That's proof the hit was a setup. If you play that at the dinner, it clears Daniel." "But it doesn't expose the gambling," I said, starting to understand. "And it doesn't touch my uncle." "Exactly. Tyler and Vance can cover up the rest if we only expose one piece. But if we expose everything at once, in front of the boosters, the coaches, the board, and the parents, there's no coming back from that." I sat down on the edge of a music stand. My legs felt weak. "You want us to work together." "I want us to burn them all down." Chloe leaned forward, her eyes locking onto mine. "Your uncle. Tyler. Miller. The whole operation. And if my father has to face consequences for what he did, then so be it. He made his choice when he signed that paper." "What's the plan?" Chloe outlined it quickly. At the dinner, she would stand up and expose her own father and the gambling ring. Sienna would get Marcus to confess and record everything. I would bring the memory card and play the raw footage. Daniel would be there as backup. We would take them all down together. "If this goes wrong," I said quietly, "your father could go to jail. Your reputation will be gone." Chloe stood up. She was taller than me, but she managed to look fragile, like a girl carrying the weight of the world. "My father made his choice. I'm not responsible for his mistakes. But I am responsible for what I do next. And I'm not letting Tyler win." I nodded slowly. "I'm meeting Daniel at the rink tonight. I'll tell him everything." "Good." Chloe almost smiled. "Tell him I'm sorry. For all of it." I walked to the door. At the threshold, I paused and looked back. "Chloe? Thank you." She nodded. Her eyes were still wet with those carefully timed tears. I walked out. The second the door clicked shut, Chloe's face changed. The tears vanished. The trembling stopped. Her soft, pleading expression hardened into something cold and sharp. She pulled out her real phone from her back pocket. The one she hadn't shown Emily. She typed a quick message to Tyler. She bought it. She's bringing the memory card to the dinner. Everything is in place. Tyler's reply came fast. Good girl. Thursday, you play the file. Daniel goes down. Emily goes down. And your father walks away clean. Just like we agreed. Chloe slipped the phone back into her pocket. Sienna watched her with wide, nervous eyes. "Are you sure about this?" Sienna whispered. "Emily really thinks we're on her side." "Emily thinks whatever I tell her to think." Chloe smoothed her hair in the reflection of the piano's polished surface. "She's desperate. Desperate people believe what they want to believe." "But your dad..." "My dad is a fool who signed a document he shouldn't have signed. But he's still my dad." Chloe's voice hardened. "And I'm not letting some charity case scholarship girl destroy my family just because her uncle has a grudge against the Carters." Sienna looked down at her hands. "What about Marcus?" "What about him? He's guilty. Let him burn with the rest of them." Chloe picked up her bag and walked toward the door. "Come on. We have a dinner to prepare for." I walked out of the music room and into the empty hallway. My hands were shaking, but for the first time in days, it wasn't from fear. I pulled out my phone and texted Daniel. We need to talk. I have news. Good news, for once. His reply came before I even put the phone away. Meet me at the rink tonight. I stared at the screen. Chloe Sterling had apologized. Chloe Sterling had cried. Chloe Sterling was going to help us expose her own father to save us all. I believed her. I shouldn't have.
