Viral Villain

1528 Words
The morning air outside the school tasted like exhaust fumes and ice. I pulled my jacket tight, trying to ignore the row of white news vans parked along the curb. Cameras were already set up near the front steps, pointed like weapons at every student walking through the double doors. "Is it true he used his elbow?" a girl whispered near the lockers, her phone glowing in her palm. "Someone on Twitter said Jesse has a fractured skull." "He should be in handcuffs," a guy replied, slamming his locker shut. "Daniel always belonged in a cage anyway." I kept my chin down and clutched my backpack strap as I hurried past. My leather bound notebook felt like a brick inside my bag. Every screen I passed was playing the exact same fifteen second clip. By six o'clock this morning, the video had gone totally viral. Over two million views, trending under tags calling Daniel a thug, a criminal, and a monster. I stopped at my locker and pulled out my phone. The video started right as Daniel crossed the blue line. But the clip was wrong. Someone had cropped the frame down tight, cutting off the Eastview winger who shoved Daniel from behind. The video jumped straight from Daniel losing his balance to his shoulder crashing into Jesse's head. It slowed down right on Jesse's helmet flying off, making the hit look deliberate. The caption beneath read: High school captain deliberately ends rival player's season. Demand justice for Jesse Grey. "That is not what happened," I whispered. "That is not how it went down." "Emily. In my office. Right now." I jumped. Coach Miller stood a few feet away, his eyes bloodshot and his hair messy. He did not wait for my answer before walking toward the athletic department suite. I shoved my phone in my pocket and followed him inside. Mr. Vance was sitting behind his wide oak desk, talking rapidly into his desk phone. "I do not care what the regional board says. We are releasing the statement in ten minutes. The school will not be held liable for a rogue player." He slammed the phone down and pointed at the empty chair across from him. "Sit, Emily." I sat on the edge of the seat, my back straight and my hands folded in my lap. I had learned years ago never to look too comfortable in front of my uncle. He noticed everything. Every slouch, every sigh, every flicker of emotion. At home, those things cost me. Here in his office, they could cost me even more. "How is Jesse?" I asked, keeping my voice steady. "He has a severe concussion and neck trauma," Vance said flatly, rubbing his temples. He had a cup of black coffee on his desk, the same bitter brand he drank at the dinner table every night. "His parents are talking about criminal charges against Daniel. The entire district is under fire." "Mr. Vance, about the game footage..." "The official footage has already been handed over to the league board," Vance interrupted. He tapped his ring finger against the desk twice. I knew that tap. It meant he was running out of patience, and at home, that usually meant a long night of cold silence or worse. "The tape leaves no room for debate. Daniel lost control of his temper." "No, he did not," I said, my voice rising. "I was right there on the bench. Daniel was pushed from behind. If you look at the raw tape..." "Emily," Coach Miller cut in from the window. "Listen to Mr. Vance." My uncle leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto mine. The same eyes I saw across the dinner table every night. The same eyes that had watched me grow up, never warm, never soft, always calculating. "You are an exceptional student, Emily. You have a straight A average and a full academic scholarship application sitting on my desk, waiting for my final signature." He said it like a compliment, but I knew better. I had heard that tone my whole life. Every meal, every ride to school, every parent teacher night, he reminded me how much I owed him. How grateful I should be that he took me in when no one else would. A heavy silence settled over the room. The threat was quiet, but it hit me like a cold wave. "I would hate to see a bright young woman ruin her future," Vance continued smoothly, "by making wild claims that contradict the official school report. Daniel Carter is suspended indefinitely. He is not permitted on school grounds, and he is off the team." "You are throwing him away," I whispered, my knuckles turning white. "Without even checking the full tape." "The case is closed," Vance said, turning his back to me. "Hand over your game notes to Coach Miller. You are dismissed." I stood up slowly, my legs feeling like they belonged to someone else. In the corridor, people were celebrating Daniel's suspension as if a villain had been defeated. Someone had hung a printed screenshot of the viral video on the bulletin board with the word JUSTICE written across it in red marker. I felt sick to my stomach. I made a sharp turn down the quiet hallway near the music rooms, desperate for air. A heavy hand grabbed my arm and pulled me into the dark alcove beside the janitor's closet. I gasped, but a hand clamped softly over my mouth. "Do not scream," a rough voice whispered. "It is just me." I went rigid as Daniel stepped into the dim light. He looked terrible. Deep purple circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He wore a gray hoodie pulled low over his forehead, and his right knuckles were scraped raw. "What are you doing here?" I whispered, checking over my shoulder. "Vance said you are banned from campus." "I do not care," Daniel said, his voice raw. He pulled out his phone and tapped the screen. "Look at this." It was the viral clip again. "I have seen it," I told him. "They cut it," Daniel spat out, his eyes wide with fury. "Someone edited the official server file, Emily. The push is gone. They made it look like I hunted Jesse down." "I know." "My dad called a lawyer this morning," Daniel said, his chest heaving. "The league is revoking my status. The police are asking questions. My entire life is over, and everyone thinks I am a monster." He crashed his fist against the wall, the dull thud echoing. "I did not try to hurt him, Emily. You have to believe me." "Daniel, stop," I said, grabbing his wrist. "I know you didn't do it." Daniel froze. He looked down at my hand on his wrist, then up at my face. The arrogant hockey captain was gone, replaced by a terrified seventeen year old boy whose world was burning down. "You believe me?" he asked quietly. "I do not just believe you," I whispered, pulling out my phone and unlocking a private video file. "I was watching through my camera lens. Look." I held the screen up between us. The raw footage played in clear high definition. Daniel watched in silence as the video showed the Eastview winger shoving him in the spine. Then it clearly showed Jesse dropping his stick, lowering his head, and leaning straight into the impact. Daniel let out a long, ragged breath. "Where did you get this?" "It is from my tripod camera," I said, slipping the phone back in my pocket. "My angle caught everything. But Vance just threatened to take away my college scholarship if I talk about extra footage." "Someone inside the school deleted those five seconds before releasing the video," Daniel said, his eyes narrowing. "Which means someone wants you framed," I said softly. "And Jesse out of the way, too." Footsteps echoed from the main hallway, heading straight toward us. Daniel grabbed my hand, pulling me deeper into the shadows. "We cannot prove anything with just your word," he whispered. "If you hand that tape over alone, Vance will destroy your scholarship and delete the file. We need to find out who edited the server video first." "How?" I asked. "You are banned from school, and I am being watched." Daniel looked down at our joined hands, then back into my eyes. "They expect me to stay away from you. But if everyone thinks we are together, no one will question why I am picking you up, waiting for you near the rink, or spending every night with you." I stared at him, my breath catching. "What are you saying?" "Fake date me, Emily," Daniel whispered, his voice dead serious. "Give us an excuse to be seen together everywhere without raising suspicion. Help me find the missing footage on the server, and I promise I will protect your scholarship with my life." Before I could answer, the footsteps stopped right outside our alcove. A shadow fell across the floor. I held my breath, pressing my back against the cold brick. Daniel's hand tightened around mine. We stood frozen in the darkness, waiting.
