Chapter 1: The executive elevator climbed in complete silence. Its smooth ascent seemed almost effortless, yet every passing floor tightened the anticipation waiting above. Daniel Brooks stood one step behind Adrian, reviewing the morning schedule on his tablet. "Thirty seconds to the executive floor," he said quietly. Adrian didn't respond immediately. His reflection stared back at him in the polished steel walls of the elevator. Ten years. Ten years had passed since he had last stood inside this building. Back then, he had arrived wearing the only suit he owned—a cheap black jacket he had bought second-hand with money saved from repairing old computers in his neighborhood. He had been terrified of making a mistake during his internship interview. Now... He owned forty percent of the company. Life had a strange sense of humor. The elevator chimed. "Executive Floor." The doors slid open. Outside, nearly fifty executives, department heads, senior managers and board members stood in neat rows. The atmosphere was tense. No one dared whisper. Richard Harrington stood at the front, leaning lightly on his polished walking cane. Though age had added silver to his hair, his sharp blue eyes still carried the confidence that had built one of Australia's largest technology companies. The moment Adrian stepped out, Richard smiled. "There you are." His voice echoed across the hallway. Without hesitation, the elderly head of company walked forward. To everyone's surprise... He opened his arms. Adrian smiled warmly and embraced him. "It has been too long, Richard." "Far too long, my boy." For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Many executives exchanged confused glances. Most had worked with Richard Harrington for years. They had never seen him greet anyone like family. Richard stepped back, resting both hands on Adrian's shoulders. "You've done Australia proud." "I only did what you taught me." Richard laughed. "I taught you business." "You taught yourself greatness." A respectful silence followed. No applause. No cameras. Just genuine admiration between mentor and student. Richard finally turned toward the waiting executives. "Ladies and gentlemen..." His smile widened. "It gives me great pleasure to introduce the future of Harrington Technologies." Every eye focused on Adrian. Some executives looked impressed. Others curious. A few visibly nervous. Richard continued. "Many of you know his achievements." "Some of you have worked with his teams." "But none of you truly know the man standing before you." He paused. "Ten years ago, he joined this company as a university intern." Several people looked at one another in surprise. "Within months he solved problems our senior engineers couldn't." Another pause. "When I asked him how he had done it..." Richard chuckled. "...he apologized for taking too long." A ripple of soft laughter spread through the room. "He asked for nothing." "He never complained." "He never believed any task was beneath him." "I knew then that I had found someone extraordinary." Richard's voice became more emotional. "When our Singapore expansion struggled..." "The board wanted to abandon it." "I refused." "I sent one young man instead." He looked proudly at Adrian. "The rest..." "...is history." Silence filled the executive floor. Many executives suddenly understood why this unknown president had been chosen. He hadn't inherited the position. He had earned it. Richard lifted his cane slightly. "Everyone..." "Meet your new President." Applause erupted throughout the hallway. Some clapped enthusiastically. Others politely. Several executives looked relieved. The new president seemed... human. Not the ruthless tyrant they had imagined. Standing near the back of the gathering... Charlotte Hayes couldn't move. The applause faded into meaningless noise. Her heart hammered so violently she thought everyone around her could hear it. Adrian. It really was him. The same quiet university student who used to spend nights in the computer laboratory because he couldn't afford internet at home. The same young man who had walked her home after evening lectures because he worried about her safety. The same man she had abandoned. Her throat tightened. He looked different. Not because of the expensive suit. Or the luxury watch. Or the security surrounding him. It was his confidence. University Adrian had always spoken softly, carefully choosing every word as though afraid of saying the wrong thing. This Adrian... Didn't need to prove anything. Power had become part of him. He carried it naturally. Almost effortlessly. Then something happened that made Charlotte's stomach sink. Richard looked toward her. "Charlotte." She flinched. "Yes... Mr. Harrington?" "Please come forward." Every pair of eyes turned toward her. Her legs suddenly felt heavy. She forced herself to walk. One step. Then another. Until she stood only a few feet away from Adrian. Close enough to see the faint scar near his eyebrow. She remembered exactly how he had gotten it. He had cut himself while building a computer from discarded parts in his tiny garage. She had kissed that scar once. Adrian met her eyes. His expression remained calm. Professional. Nothing more. Richard smiled warmly. "Charlotte has been one of our finest executive assistants for years." "I'm sure the two of you will work closely together." Charlotte waited. Surely... Surely he would say something. Recognize her. Ask how she had been. Anything. Instead... Adrian extended his hand exactly as he had done moments earlier with the other executives. "Miss Hayes." His voice was calm. "It's a pleasure to meet you professionally." Professionally. The single word struck harder than any insult ever could. Charlotte stared at his hand. For a brief second... University memories flooded back. Late-night study sessions. Coffee dates. Birthday surprises. Dreams of building a future together. Gone. Reduced to a professional handshake. She forced herself to smile. "Welcome to Harrington Technologies... Mr. President." Their hands met. His grip was firm. Confident. Respectful. No warmth. No hesitation. No trace of the young man who had once loved her with everything he had. After barely two seconds... He released her hand. "Thank you." Then he turned to greet the next executive. As though nothing had happened. Charlotte stood frozen. She had imagined many versions of this reunion over the years. She had imagined anger. Bitterness. Cold revenge. She had even imagined him refusing to acknowledge her. But this... This complete indifference... It was unbearable. For the first time in ten years... Charlotte realized something she had never allowed herself to believe. She hadn't just lost Adrian. She had become a stranger in his life. Meanwhile, forty floors below... Lily Carter returned to mopping the marble lobby. Yet her thoughts kept drifting back to the mysterious man who had picked up her cleaning bottle instead of letting someone else do it. She smiled to herself. "I didn't even ask his name..." The elderly receptionist overheard her. "You don't know who he is?" Lily shook her head. "No." The receptionist laughed. "My dear..." "That's the new President of Harrington Technologies." Lily's mop stopped moving. "The president?" "The one and only." Lily looked toward the elevator. "He... doesn't seem like the kind of person who would become president." "What kind of person is that?" She thought for a moment. "The kind who would help someone like me." The receptionist smiled knowingly. "Maybe that's exactly why he became one." Lily looked down at the bottle still resting on her cleaning cart. For some reason... She couldn't stop smiling. She had no idea... That brief encounter had just changed both of their lives forever.
