The Enemy Within

Graham Bennett closed the blinds to his office one panel at a time. The laughter from the corridor faded as the room darkened. He placed his leather folder on the desk and slowly removed his glasses. For nearly thirty years, he had occupied the office overlooking Sydney Harbour. He had watched presidents come and go. Some lasted months. Some survived only a few years. All of them had eventually learned the same lesson. No one truly controlled Harrington Technologies. Not completely. Power inside the company was never held by one person. It flowed quietly through influence, information, and alliances. And Graham Bennett had mastered all three. He walked to a cabinet hidden behind an oil painting and unlocked it with a small brass key. Inside were dozens of neatly labeled files. Each contained information that had never appeared in company records. Executives. Board members. Government officials. Business competitors. Over the years he had learned one simple truth. Every successful person carried a secret. His job was simply to discover it before anyone else did. He opened a drawer marked: A. COLE Only one folder rested inside. Thin. Almost empty. Graham frowned. "That's unusual." He opened it. University scholarship. Employment contract. Singapore promotion. International awards. Shareholder agreement. Nothing controversial. Nothing embarrassing. Nothing useful. He closed the folder slowly. "No one becomes this powerful without making enemies." "There has to be something." A knock interrupted his thoughts. "Come in." His executive assistant entered carrying a tablet. "You asked for the personnel records of everyone who transferred from Singapore." Graham accepted the tablet. "Thank you." She hesitated. "Is something wrong, Mr. Bennett?" He smiled politely. "Just preparing for our new president." She nodded and quietly left. The smile disappeared the moment the door closed. Graham opened the personnel list. Hundreds of names appeared. His eyes scanned each one carefully. Department managers. Engineers. Project leaders. Administrative staff. Then one name caught his attention. Daniel Brooks Executive Assistant. Ten years with Adrian Cole. Every international assignment. Every promotion. Every major acquisition. Graham leaned back in his chair. "If anyone knows Adrian..." "...it's Daniel." He made a note on a yellow legal pad. Watch Brooks. He continued scrolling. Nothing. No scandals. No lawsuits. No disciplinary hearings. No unexplained resignations. It was almost irritating. He had spent decades investigating powerful executives. Every one of them eventually revealed a weakness. Greed. Pride. Anger. Ambition. Something. Adrian's record looked... Clean. Too clean. Graham stood and walked back to the window. Below, employees crossed the plaza carrying laptops and takeaway coffee. Most had no idea how fragile success really was. One rumour. One mistake. One bad decision. Careers disappeared overnight. He had seen it happen countless times. He folded his hands behind his back. "So who are you really, Adrian Cole?" His phone vibrated. A private number. He answered immediately. "Yes?" A calm male voice spoke. "How's the new president?" "Popular." "I expected that." "So did I." A brief silence followed. "Can he be influenced?" Graham looked toward Adrian's office across the corridor. "No." "Bought?" "I don't think so." "Intimidated?" "I doubt it." The caller laughed quietly. "You sound impressed." "I'm cautious." "There's a difference." Another pause. "What do you need?" Graham didn't answer immediately. Finally, he said, "I need time." "You have one month." The line went dead. Graham stared at the phone. One month. He disliked deadlines. They forced people into mistakes. He set the phone down and returned to his desk. As he did, his eyes drifted toward the security monitor mounted in the corner of the office. The camera feed showed the executive corridor. Adrian was walking back from reception. Employees greeted him as he passed. He stopped for each one. A handshake here. A brief conversation there. He wasn't pretending. That was the dangerous part. People could tell the difference. Graham zoomed the camera slightly. The image sharpened. Lily Carter stepped out of the executive pantry carrying a tray of fresh coffee for the boardroom. As she rounded the corner, one cup slid toward the edge of the tray. Adrian noticed instantly. He reached out and steadied it before it could fall. Neither spoke. They simply smiled. Then each continued in opposite directions. A gesture lasting no more than three seconds. Yet Graham watched it twice. Then a third time. He paused the footage. His fingers tapped lightly against the desk. "The cleaner..." His instincts, sharpened by decades in corporate politics, told him something important. Not because there was romance. There wasn't. Not yet. But because Adrian treated her exactly the same way he treated everyone else—with genuine respect. And genuine respect had a habit of turning into fierce loyalty. If Graham wanted to weaken Adrian's growing influence... He first had to understand the people Adrian would never abandon. A slow smile spread across his face. "Every king..." "...has a circle." "My job..." "...is to find the weakest link." He closed the security feed. Outside his office, the afternoon carried on as usual. Inside... The first move in a silent corporate chess match had just been made.
