The Walk That Changed Everything

Chapter 5: The following morning arrived with clear blue skies stretching across Sydney. By seven-thirty, Harrington Technologies was already alive with activity. Employees carrying coffee cups hurried through the revolving doors while security guards greeted familiar faces with friendly nods. Inside the executive offices, Daniel Brooks stood outside Adrian's office with a tablet in his hand. He knocked once. "Come in." Daniel entered to find Adrian already working. Several reports lay open across the desk, each covered with handwritten notes. Daniel glanced at his watch. "You've been here since six again, haven't you?" Adrian smiled without looking up. "I couldn't sleep." "You never could before a challenge." Daniel placed the day's schedule on the desk. "You have meetings until four this afternoon." Adrian scanned the list before sliding it back. "Cancel half of them." Daniel wasn't surprised. "Department visits?" Adrian nodded. "I've spent enough time reading reports." "I want to meet the people behind the numbers." "I expected that." Daniel began making changes immediately. "Where would you like to start?" Adrian looked toward the window overlooking the city. "Customer Support." Daniel looked up in surprise. "Not Engineering?" "No." "The people who speak to our customers every day know this company better than anyone." "They hear every complaint." "Every compliment." "If I want the truth..." "I start there." Daniel smiled. "That's exactly why Richard chose you." Word spread through the building before Adrian even left the executive floor. "The president is visiting departments again." "Today?" "Apparently he's starting with Customer Support." Employees straightened their desks. Managers reviewed unfinished reports. Some people nervously adjusted their ties. Others simply hoped not to embarrass themselves. When Adrian stepped out of the elevator on the twelfth floor, conversations stopped. Nearly a hundred employees turned toward him. The department manager hurried forward. "Good morning, Mr. President." "Good morning." "I've gathered everyone for introductions." Adrian shook his head politely. "No need." The manager looked confused. "I'd rather see everyone working." Relief spread across several faces. Adrian walked slowly between the rows of desks. Instead of looking at employees... He looked at their workstations. Family photographs. Sticky notes. Half-finished cups of coffee. Drawings made by children. Every desk told a story. He stopped beside a young woman speaking calmly into a headset. "I'm sorry your order hasn't arrived, Mr. Wilson." "I understand your frustration." "Let me see what I can do." She noticed Adrian standing nearby and looked horrified. He smiled gently and motioned for her to continue. She finished the call before removing her headset. "I'm so sorry, sir." "What for?" "I didn't realise you were standing there." "You were helping a customer." "That's exactly where your attention should have been." The young woman relaxed. "My name's Emma." "Nice to meet you, Emma." He glanced at her performance screen. The numbers were excellent. "Five years with the company?" "Yes." "Congratulations." Her eyes widened. "You looked at my file?" "I looked at everyone's." She smiled with quiet pride. For the rest of the day, Emma would tell everyone she knew about that conversation. On the executive floor, Charlotte struggled to focus. Every few minutes another employee walked past her desk talking about Adrian. "He remembered my name." "He asked about my project." "He thanked our whole team." "I've never met a president like him." Each compliment tightened the knot in her chest. She remembered another time. Years earlier. University library. Midnight. Adrian had stayed behind to help a first-year student understand programming after everyone else had left. The student had offered him money. Adrian had refused. "I've already been paid." "By who?" "The people who helped me when I didn't understand." Charlotte smiled sadly at the memory. That kindness... It had never changed. Only she had. A shadow appeared beside her desk. She looked up. Richard Harrington smiled warmly. "Busy morning?" "A little." He studied her carefully. "May I ask you something?" "Of course." "What do you think of Adrian?" Her heart skipped. She chose her words carefully. "I think..." "...the company is very fortunate." Richard nodded thoughtfully. "I agree." He started to walk away before stopping. "You know..." "I've never seen him this relaxed." Charlotte looked puzzled. "What do you mean?" "In Singapore..." "He worked constantly." "He smiled occasionally." "But this week..." Richard chuckled softly. "I've caught him smiling three times." "I wonder why." Charlotte forced a smile. "I couldn't possibly say." But the question stayed with her. Meanwhile, Lily Carter was arranging fresh flowers in the executive reception area. The company replaced them every Tuesday. She enjoyed the task. Flowers made even the most serious office feel welcoming. As she finished trimming the final stem, she heard footsteps approaching. She turned. Adrian was walking down the corridor alone. No security. No executives. Just him. He noticed the flowers immediately. "They're beautiful." Lily smiled. "They arrived this morning." He stepped closer. "You arranged them?" She nodded. "My grandmother taught me." "She believed flowers could change a person's mood." Adrian looked at the arrangement for several moments. "I think she was right." Lily laughed softly. "I'll tell her that." "She's still alive?" "Eighty-two." "Still grows roses." "Still tells everyone what to do." Adrian laughed. "She sounds like my grandmother." "You'll have to introduce them one day." The words escaped before either of them realised what had been said. An awkward silence followed. Lily's cheeks flushed. "I didn't mean..." Adrian smiled. "I know." For reasons neither could explain... The awkwardness quickly disappeared. Instead... Both found themselves smiling. At the far end of the corridor, Charlotte stepped out of the elevator carrying several folders. She froze. She could only see them from a distance. But she saw enough. Adrian was smiling. Not the polite smile he gave employees. A genuine one. And standing opposite him... Was the cleaner. Charlotte felt something tighten inside her chest. She had spent years convincing herself she had moved on. Yet seeing Adrian smile at another woman... Especially one who seemed so comfortable around him... Awakened emotions she thought had disappeared forever. Without realising it... She gripped the folders so tightly that the papers inside bent at the corners. For the first time... Jealousy found its way back into her heart. And from the shadows of the executive corridor... Someone else noticed everything. Graham Bennett. He watched the exchange with narrowed eyes. A slow smile spread across his face. "So..." He murmured to himself. "Everyone has a weakness." He turned and disappeared into his office. Already planning how to use what he had just seen.
