Part 2 The applause inside the boardroom faded, leaving behind an atmosphere that felt almost sacred. For Richard Harrington, this was more than a business transaction. It was the culmination of a decade-long decision. He looked around the room, then at Adrian. "I've waited ten years for this day." Adrian smiled respectfully. "And I've spent ten years preparing for it." Richard laughed softly. "I know you have." The elderly founder walked toward the large windows overlooking Sydney harbour. The rain had begun to ease, and rays of sunlight pierced through the clouds, casting shimmering reflections across the water. "When I first met you," Richard began, "I wasn't impressed by your grades." The directors exchanged puzzled looks. "I wasn't impressed by your technical skills either." Daniel Brooks smiled. He had heard this story many times. "I was impressed because you stayed behind after your interview." Richard turned to the board. "Do any of you know why?" Nobody answered. "He noticed that one of our reception computers was running unusually slowly." Several directors chuckled. "He asked if he could fix it." Richard shook his head with a smile. "The poor boy wasn't even hired yet, but he spent nearly three hours repairing a computer that wasn't his responsibility." He looked directly at Adrian. "I knew then that you weren't chasing a salary." "You were chasing excellence." Adrian lowered his eyes briefly. "My mother always said, 'If you do a job, do it so well that people remember your name long after you've gone.'" The room fell quiet. Richard nodded. "Your mother was a wise woman." For a moment, Adrian's expression softened. He hadn't heard anyone speak about his mother in years. She had passed away while he was in Singapore, and missing her funeral remained one of the deepest regrets of his life. Richard seemed to sense the emotion. He placed a comforting hand on Adrian's shoulder. "She would be proud of the man you've become." Adrian gave a small nod. "Thank you." The company secretary cleared his throat gently. "Mr. President, the staff are waiting in the auditorium for your introductory address." Richard smiled. "They're eager to meet you." Adrian glanced at his watch. "Let's not keep them waiting." Outside the boardroom, the atmosphere had changed completely. Employees who had been pretending to work were now openly discussing the company's new leader. The office messaging system was flooded with speculation. Finance Department Group Chat Amanda: Did anyone else see his convoy? Jacob: Forget the convoy. Did you see the watch he was wearing? Amanda: I couldn't even look at the watch. I was trying not to stare at his security team. Michael: Someone in IT says he built the Singapore branch into the most profitable division in the company. Jacob: Someone in HR says he fired an entire executive team in Singapore in one day. Amanda: Seriously? Michael: No idea if it's true. Rumours spread faster than facts. On the twentieth floor, engineers claimed he personally wrote software that generated hundreds of millions of dollars. On the marketing floor, someone insisted he had once turned down an offer from an American technology giant worth billions. Nobody knew what was real anymore. The mystery surrounding Adrian only made him more fascinating. Charlotte remained seated at her desk, but her concentration had disappeared. Her computer screen displayed the day's meeting schedule. She had been staring at it for nearly ten minutes. Without reading a single word. She replayed the handshake over and over in her mind. "Miss Hayes." Not Charlotte. Not Char. Not even a flicker of recognition in his voice. Professional. Polite. Distant. She suddenly understood something she had never expected. She had always assumed that if Adrian became successful, he would come looking for her. Maybe to show her what she had lost. Maybe to ask why she had left. Maybe to prove himself. Instead... He had returned without needing anything from her. That realization hurt more than she wanted to admit. Her phone vibrated. The caller ID displayed a familiar name. Ryan Kensington She sighed before answering. "Hello." Ryan's confident voice came through immediately. "So, have you met the new president yet?" "Yes." "What's he like?" Charlotte hesitated. "Professional." Ryan laughed. "Everyone keeps talking about him." "They're saying he's some kind of genius." Charlotte remained silent. Ryan continued. "Don't worry. These corporate heroes usually disappoint people after a few months." She looked toward the closed boardroom doors. "I don't think he will." Ryan frowned on the other end of the line. "You sound impressed." "I'm just being honest." "You're not developing a crush on your new boss, are you?" Charlotte's expression hardened. "Ryan." "What?" "I'm working." "I'll call you later." She ended the call before he could respond. For the first time in months... She felt irritated by his voice. Downstairs, Lily Carter wheeled her cleaning cart into the employee cafeteria. It was almost lunchtime, and the room was still quiet. She began wiping the tables one by one, humming softly to herself. Her supervisor, Margaret, approached carrying a clipboard. "Lily." "Yes, Margaret?" "The executive floor called." Lily looked surprised. "The executive floor?" "They want the president's private office cleaned before the afternoon." Lily blinked. "Me?" Margaret smiled. "You've got the highest inspection score on the entire cleaning team." "I trust your work." Lily felt both nervous and excited. "I won't disappoint you." "I know you won't." Margaret handed her a special access card. "This opens the executive offices." Lily stared at the card for a moment. She had worked at Harrington Technologies for nearly two years. She had never been allowed onto the executive floor. She carefully slipped the card into her pocket. Completely unaware... That before the day ended... She and Adrian Cole would meet again. And this time... They would actually talk. End of Chapter 2 – Part 2
