The Ghost Everyone Forgot

Chapter 2 The executive floor remained silent for several seconds after the introductions ended. No one moved. No one spoke. It was as though everyone was waiting for someone else to break the spell. Finally, Richard Harrington smiled. "Well..." "I believe our new president has a company to lead." Soft laughter rippled through the executives. The tension eased ever so slightly. "Boardroom," Richard said, gesturing toward the oak double doors at the end of the corridor. "We still have paperwork to complete." Adrian nodded. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your warm welcome." His voice was calm, deep, and effortlessly commanding. "I know today has been filled with uncertainty." "I also know many of you have questions." A few executives exchanged quick glances. Some looked nervous. Others looked hopeful. "I'll answer those questions." "But first..." He looked around the room. "...I want everyone to remember one thing." "This company wasn't built by one man." He glanced toward Richard. "It was built by thousands of hardworking people." His eyes swept across the managers, assistants, and administrative staff standing nearby. "And I have no intention of forgetting that." The words were simple. Yet they immediately eased the fear that had settled over the floor since dawn. Many employees had spent the previous week worrying about layoffs. About restructuring. About losing careers they had spent years building. Adrian seemed to understand that without anyone telling him. He smiled faintly. "Let's get to work." The boardroom doors opened. The directors followed Richard and Adrian inside. The heavy doors closed behind them. Outside... The whispers began instantly. "I like him already." "He isn't what I expected." "Did you hear what Richard said?" "He started here as an intern?" "No wonder Richard trusts him." "I heard he saved the Singapore division." "I heard he built it from nothing." "No..." "I heard he made it bigger than the Australian branch." The rumours spread through the executive floor like wildfire. Within minutes, they had travelled to Human Resources. Then Finance. Then Marketing. Then the Engineering Division. By ten o'clock... Almost everyone in the fifty-storey building was talking about only one person. Adrian Cole. Charlotte stood motionless beside the reception desk outside the boardroom. Her tablet rested against her chest, untouched. She couldn't hear the conversations around her anymore. Her mind had travelled back ten years. She saw a small coffee shop near the university library. Adrian sitting across from her wearing a faded grey hoodie. A steaming cup of hot chocolate between them because coffee had been too expensive. He had smiled awkwardly before sliding a tiny wrapped package across the table. "I know it's not much..." She remembered laughing. "You didn't have to buy me anything." "I wanted to." Inside the package had been a silver bookmark engraved with a single sentence. Every great story deserves a beautiful beginning. She still had it. Hidden inside a drawer in her apartment. She had never thrown it away. Not even after she left him. A voice interrupted her thoughts. "Charlotte?" She looked up. Melissa stood beside her carrying two coffees. "You look pale." "I'm fine." "No, you're not." Melissa lowered her voice. "Do you know him?" Charlotte hesitated. A thousand possible answers rushed through her mind. Finally... "We went to university together." Melissa raised an eyebrow. "Just university?" Charlotte forced a smile. "Yes." The lie tasted bitter. Melissa studied her for another moment. Then nodded. "If you say so." But she didn't believe it. Not for a second. Across the hallway, Chief Financial Officer Graham Bennett had noticed the brief exchange. He had also noticed something else. The way Charlotte had looked at Adrian. The way Adrian had addressed her. Professional. Too professional. Graham had spent thirty years reading people. Something had happened between those two. He just didn't know what. Yet. Inside the boardroom, thick mahogany doors shut out the noise of the outside world. Only eight people remained. Richard Harrington. The company secretary. The legal team. Three board members. Daniel Brooks. And Adrian. The atmosphere was formal now. Stacks of legal documents covered the polished table. The company secretary adjusted his glasses. "Mr. Cole..." "Before we proceed, I am legally required to confirm that you understand the responsibilities attached to accepting forty percent ownership of Harrington Technologies and the office of President." "I understand." "And that these responsibilities become effective immediately upon signing." "I understand." The secretary nodded. "Very well." One by one... The documents were placed before Adrian. He read every page. Every clause. Every signature line. Richard watched him with quiet satisfaction. Most executives signed contracts without reading them. Adrian never had. That habit had saved the company more than once. Nearly twenty minutes passed. Finally... Adrian picked up the fountain pen. The room fell silent. With one smooth movement... He signed his name. Adrian James Cole. The secretary smiled. "It is my honour to congratulate you..." "...Mr. President." Richard stood. "So begins a new chapter for Harrington Technologies." He extended his hand. Adrian shook it. Around the table, applause broke out. Not loud. Not dramatic. But sincere. Outside those walls, no one yet understood that the company had just entered a completely new era. And somewhere else in the building... A young cleaner was unknowingly walking toward a chance encounter that neither she nor the new president would ever forget. End of – Part 1
