“If he doesn't let go of me in the next ten seconds, shoot him, Officer Yi Shen!” Cho Ben ordered.
He glared at me, baring his teeth.
With one swift motion. Yi Shen drew his gun and pressed the barrel onto my head.
“LET HIM GO!” Yi Shen's voice was calm and deadly.
Fei glanced from Yi Shen to Cho Ben. Before anyone can react, he pulls out Cho Ben’s gun from the holster.
Points it at Cho Ben.
“You took an officer’s gun? Do you want to die?” Cho Ben asked, shaking with anger.
“This is fair. Now, we are all pointing guns!” Fei’s eyes lit up like a madman’s.
“What are you doing, Fei? Drop your gun?” I shouted at him.
But he kept glaring at Cho Ben.
“This is him, right? The devil that destroyed your family?” Fei asked.
He ignored me and didn’t stop glaring at Cho Ben.
Yes.
The answer echoed in my mind.
My mother’s bloodied face, my sister’s limp body, and the thick smoke from that final day flooded my thoughts. I swallowed painfully. Tears welled up in my eyes.
“Both of you should stop before this gets too far. Drop the gun and let him go!” Yi Shen said almost frantically.
He looked between the three of us, clearly lost.
Then, he exalted sharply, as if he had just made up his mind.
He squared his shoulders, removed the gun safety, and nudged the barrel harder against my head.
"Dispatch, Unit 12 requesting backup at the University Teaching Hospital parking area. Suspect armed," Yi Shen said flatly.
I tightened my hands on Cho Ben’s neck.
“Die! Die, YOU BASTARD!” I shouted with every fiber of my being.
He coughed, choking, but then a twisted, sick smile spread across his face.
I couldn't take it anymore.
How dare he laugh after everything he has done?!
“We can still change things around. You haven’t done anything you would regret,” Officer Yi Shen said.
I kicked Cho Ben below his knee. He clutched his knee in pain.
“Hey, STOP!’ Yi Shen shouted.
I kicked his other leg.
Cho Ben collapsed to his knees and looked up at me with burning hatred.
I raised my fist.
At the last second, Sang Zhi jumped in front of him. Quickly, my fist froze mid-air.
Her eyes widened with fear. My hand was inches from her face.
She was gasping, but she still lifted her chin and met my gaze.
“You should stop this, Lin Wen,” she said carefully.
She pointed at Fei.
“See? You are not the only one who will get into trouble if you go through with this.”
“Nah, let him,” Fei said with a shrug.
"This time, I would throw him in jail and make sure he never sees the outside again." Cho Ben spat.
“SHUT UP!” Sang Zhi turned sharply, waving an angry finger at Cho Ben.
“You b***h!” Cho Ben shouted back at her.
My fist shot forward—
Sang Zhi stands in front of it again.
"I don’t know what is going on," she said, breathing hard. “But he is not worth it.”
She points at Fei. “Your friend destroying his life for you because of something you can walk away from is just stupid.”
My lips trembled with rage. I bit down hard on them.
I couldn’t let him go. Not after everything.
Sang Zhi gently placed a hand on my arm.
“Let him go.” She said softly.
“Lin Wen, I am on your side, no matter what you choose,” Fei said calmly. “So…is he dying tonight?”
“DROP YOUR GUN!” Yi Shen thundered.
He turned his gun toward Fei and pressed the barrel against his head. My eyes flashed.
Cho Ben laughed menacingly.
Sang Zhi searched my eyes.
“You are the only one who can stop this now,” she pleaded.
I close my eyes.
Exhaled and released Cho Ben’s neck.
Fei clenched his teeth, sighed, and dropped the gun.
Both of us slowly put our hands behind our heads.
Yi Shen quickly kicked the gun toward himself and picked it up, still aiming his weapon at us.
Cho Ben kicked my leg. I did not react.
He grabbed his gun from Yi Shen and slammed the barrel on my forehead.
“This time I won’t make the same mistake.” He corked the gun.
“We should arrest them and bring them in,” Yi Shen advised, glancing nervously at his partner.
“No. Vermin like them should be put down when you get the chance,” Cho Ben said.
I knew he had no intention of letting us go.
“What are you doing? You are not going to kill him…are you?” Sang Zhi asked in disbelief.
Cho Ben turned to her slowly, as if he had remembered she was there.
“You are a witness,” he said with a twisted smile. “You will report that they tried to kill me, and I killed them. They are the bad guys. We are the good guys.”
“But that is not what happened,” Sang Zhi said, taking a cautious step back.
“There are supposed to be two victims. We can turn it into three,” Cho Ben said.
Sang Zhi stepped back again. My eyes narrowed. Cho Ben is going to kill her!
Cho Ben pulled out his taser and pointed it at her.
I started lowering my hands–
Then I stopped–
Sirens.
Three police cars surround us.
I smiled.
Cho Ben glared at me and slipped the taser back in his pocket.
“You are still going to jail,” he whispered coldly.
More officers rushed out of the cars. I smirked.
“What’s so funny?” Cho Ben sneered.
He roughly turned me around and handcuffed me, while Yi Shen cuffed Fei.
“Are you guys alright?” One of the new officers asked.
“Yes,” Cho Ben said quickly. “We were just taking these men to the station. We have it handled.”
“Oh. I got orders,” the officer replied. “You are to release these two. They can’t be booked. Nothing happened here today.”
Cho Ben’s eyes nearly popped out of his socket.
Fei and I burst out laughing.
Not in his wildest imagination had he expected that.
“I don’t understand! I arrested them!” Cho Ben shouted.
“Since nothing happened here,” the officer said calmly, “there is no one to arrest. Release them, officer.”
