THREAT

"You are a psychopath, FeI!" I shouted as I leaped forward— I wrapped my arm around his neck and locked him in a chokehold. I gave Sang Zhi my most reassuring smile as I continued choking my best friend. "He is my best friend," I explained gently. "But he is the craziest, most mischievous fool I know. He never knows when to stop." Fei tapped my arm, but I didn't release him. "Let go." He growled through his teeth. I rubbed my knuckle into his head. He started flailing helplessly. "Apologize now!" I ordered, tightening my arm around his neck. "You scared the doctor who saved my life!" Sang Zhi studied us carefully. Then, her face softened with relief. She was finally smiling. Seeing her relax made me grin from ear to ear. "You are going to KILL HIM!" the officer pointed out nervously. I glanced down at Fei. He was stubbornly clawing at my arm but refusing to tap out. He was stubborn. But so was I. "Apologize to her," I whispered through clenched teeth. "Or I won't let you go." Sang Zhi gulped and stepped closer. "Maybe you should let him go," she said softly, her voice shaky. "We're just playing," I called out to her. "This is how we act around each other." Then, I looked down at Fei. "We are just playing right, Fei?" Suddenly, he tapped rapidly. I loosened my grip slightly, giving him the chance to slip free. He staggered away, rubbing his neck and glaring at me with burning anger. I smiled. He rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue against his cheek, trying not to smile back. "You asshole!" he muttered. "You almost killed me." I shrugged. "The friend of an asshole is what?" I said proudly. "Also an asshole. That makes us two assholes!" The officer and Sang Zhi stared at us with their mouths open, too stunned to speak or react. They glanced at each other. Then they both nodded slowly, as if congratulating themselves for being normal. "They are weird," Sang Zhi concluded. "I thought it was just one of them, but they are both weird." "Yes," the officer nodded in agreement. "Both of them are crazy." She laughed in relief. "I should get back to the hospital." She said, "But you still need to go to the station for your statement," the officer reminded her. "I know," she said, already walking away. "I just need to grab my bag and explain what happened so no one thinks I skipped work… or worse, disappeared." "Okay! Bye!" I called after her. But she was already gone. Almost like she ran the moment she could escape the park. Fei was staring at me suspiciously. "She is gone already. Stop gawking," he said, rolling his eyes. I replied casually. "I wasn't gawking! What the hell?" 'You are not fooling anyone, Lin Wen,' my mind mocked. I smiled awkwardly. "I will be taking my leave now," the officer said, backing away. "Thank you for your help!" I called after him. He got into his car and drove off. Now, it was just Fei and me alone in the park. I stood in front of him. He stared right ahead without looking at me. "Don't you have anything to say?" I asked calmly. I wasn't calm. I was furious. I couldn't understand my best friend. He had almost stabbed Sang Zhi. Fei squared his shoulders and looked me straight in the eyes. "I don't," he said with a shrug. "What?!" I stared at him. He ran a hand over his head and groaned. "She almost found out about us. About you!" he said casually. "I did what you should have done." He jabbed a finger into my chest. "You should be thanking me. I saved your life." He shot at me. I stepped forward menacingly, raising my fist– He leaned closer, his face to my fist, almost daring me. "Hit me. Go ahead," he said coldly. "I SAID HIT ME!" My hands slowly dropped to my sides. I couldn't do it. No matter what he did, I couldn't hurt him. He held my gaze. "Remember something, Lin Wen," he said quietly. "I don't care about the world. It can burn for all I care." He swallowed. "The only person I care about is you." My chest tightened. "You won't die," he continued. "You can't die. You're not even allowed to destroy your life." His voice turned colder. "So if anything threatens your life… like she did today… I will eliminate it without hesitation." He stared into my eyes. "Do you understand what I'm saying?" "I… I don't know what to say," I stammered. "Fei…" "You don't have to say anything," he replied, frowning. "I know you love me, but that doesn't mean that you should hurt people," I said gently. "Fine. I won't do it again," he said, throwing his hands in the air in defeat. "Promise?" He sighed. "I promise, alright!" I shook my head. He can be dramatic. Fei was acting weird. He was not respecting rank, just doing what he wanted. Over the past week, something about him had changed. Was this a change from last week, or was this from before, and I was not paying attention? "Hey, don't get the wrong idea. I don't love you or anything like that. You're just like... a brother to me," Fei frowned. I pressed my lips together, trying not to smile. "Older brother." I corrected. "We're the same age," he shot back. "I was walking by the time you were born. Show some respect." He laughed. "Still the same year," he said, waving a hand in the air like a preacher delivering a sermon. I watched him as my laughter bubbled out. He looked so innocent. Not like someone who nearly killed a woman a few minutes ago because he suspected she knew who we were. But, wait a minute. Then, something hit me. "Fei?" I said gently, placing my hands on his shoulders. "Yes?" He replied innocently. "Didn't you like Sang Zhi?" I asked carefully. "So, why did you try to kill her?" Fei shrugged and started picking dirt from under his nails. "You're important," he said casually. "She isn't." My jaw dropped. "Hi, Lin Wen." Sang Zhi's voice came from behind us. "Can we go to the station now?"
