The Nurse's Last Words

789 Words
The elevator doors opened. Damien strode out first. His expression was colder than ever. Lucas was already on the phone. "I want every security team we have searching." "Check every hospital." "Every clinic." "Every hotel." "I don't care how long it takes." "Find Nurse Evelyn." He ended the call. "Mr. Black." "The number she used has already been switched off." Damien's jaw tightened. "Trace the last location." Lucas nodded. "Our cyber team is working on it." Beside them... Isabella stood in silence. Her fingers still clutched her phone. She could still hear the scream. It echoed in her mind. Again. And again. Damien noticed. "Don't force yourself." She looked at him. "What if..." "...we're too late?" He met her eyes. "We won't stop looking." That wasn't a promise. It was a decision. ... Meanwhile... Knight Group. Adrian stared at the ultrasound appointment card lying on his desk. His secretary knocked softly. "Mr. Knight." Lucas from Blackstone International has released a statement." Adrian looked up. "What statement?" She handed him a tablet. The headline read: BLACKSTONE INTERNATIONAL ASSISTS POLICE IN SEARCH FOR RETIRED NURSE. Adrian's eyes narrowed. "Why would Damien involve the police?" Then... He remembered. The missing prescription. The possible tampering. Without another word... He grabbed his coat. "Cancel every meeting." "But Mr. Knight, the shareholders—" "I said cancel them." If someone had really harmed Isabella... He intended to find out first. ... An abandoned neighborhood. On the outskirts of the city. Rainwater dripped from broken rooftops. A frightened elderly woman hurried through a narrow alley. She constantly looked over her shoulder. "N-No..." "They found me..." Her breathing became uneven. She reached into her handbag. Pulled out a small flash drive. "This has to reach Miss Isabella..." Suddenly... A black SUV blocked the alley. Three men stepped out. The tallest smiled coldly. "You've been very difficult to find." The nurse turned and ran. Her footsteps echoed against the wet pavement. "Help!" "Somebody help!" No one answered. The alley was deserted. One of the men lunged forward. He grabbed her arm. The flash drive slipped from her hand. It rolled beneath a parked truck. The nurse struggled desperately. "Please..." "I never told anyone..." The man leaned closer. "You shouldn't have made that phone call." ... Across the city... Lucas suddenly looked at his laptop. "Mr. Black!" Damien stopped. "What is it?" "We found the phone signal." "Location?" Lucas turned the screen. "It just went offline." He zoomed in. "Old Riverside District." Damien's expression hardened. "How far?" "Ten minutes." Damien looked at Isabella. "Stay here." She immediately shook her head. "No." "This concerns me." "It's dangerous." "So is living without the truth." For a moment... Neither of them spoke. Then Damien gave a small nod. "Fine." "But you stay beside me." ... The black Rolls-Royce raced through the city. Traffic lights blurred past. Lucas sat in the passenger seat. "The police are three minutes behind us." Damien increased speed. "No." "We'll get there first." Isabella silently watched the streets rush by. Her heart pounded. She had no idea what they would find. She only prayed... They weren't too late. ... The SUV sped away from the abandoned alley. Inside... The frightened nurse lay unconscious. One of the men picked up her handbag. "Nothing." Another searched her pockets. "No flash drive." The leader frowned. "Search again." "We already did." "It has to be here!" His phone vibrated. A woman's voice came through. "Is she dead?" "Not yet." "Then finish the job." "And find the evidence." The call ended. The man looked out the rear window. His face suddenly changed. Headlights. Fast approaching. "Boss..." "We've got company." ... Damien slammed on the brakes. The Rolls-Royce stopped beside the deserted alley. He jumped out immediately. "Spread out!" Lucas and the security team rushed in opposite directions. Isabella followed. Then... She saw it. A silver necklace lying in a puddle. She bent down. Her breathing stopped. "I know this..." Damien looked at it. "What is it?" Tears filled Isabella's eyes. "The nurse..." "She was wearing this when she treated me." Her gaze slowly lifted. Fresh tire tracks led away from the alley. Someone had taken her. And they had done it... Only minutes before they arrived. Just then... Lucas shouted from behind a parked truck. "Mr. Black!" "I found something!" Everyone rushed over. Lucas reached underneath the truck. Slowly... He pulled out a tiny black flash drive. Mud covered its surface. But it was intact. Damien took it carefully. "What do you think is on it?" Before Lucas could answer... A gunshot shattered the silence. Bang! The bullet struck the concrete wall inches from Isabella's head. Damien reacted instantly. He pulled her into his arms as more shots rang out from the darkness.
