Torn Between Wolves

1269 Words
The clearing had become a battlefield without a single claw yet drawn. Kael’s words still echoed in the night: “I claim her.” Adrian’s pack bristled, every wolf on edge, their eyes fixed on the rogue who dared to challenge their Alpha on his own soil. The air pulsed with rage, fear, and something else—expectation. Jasmine stood in the middle of it all, the one tether holding both men back. The pull of the bond burned through her veins like wildfire, lashing her to Adrian even as Kael’s voice stirred something raw and restless in her chest. Her heart hammered so violently she thought it might break free of her ribs. Adrian’s voice cut through the tension, deep and commanding, the weight of centuries of dominance behind it. “You dare challenge me in front of my pack? On my land?” His silver-glinting eyes locked onto Kael with deadly precision. “The only claim you’ll make tonight is your last breath.” The wolves behind him growled in agreement, their loyalty a wall of teeth and fury. But Kael didn’t flinch. His smile was sharp, dangerous, as he turned his storm-grey gaze back to Jasmine. “You feel it, don’t you? The way the world bends when I’m near. The way he still keeps secrets from you.” Jasmine froze. Her mind flashed back—Adrian’s hesitation when she asked why the mate bond hurt like fire, the evasive answers, the walls he never let her past. And Kael’s presence… he wasn’t lying about the burn in her veins. Adrian’s growl rumbled like thunder. “Do not speak to her.” “Why?” Kael’s words were a blade. “Afraid she’ll hear the truth?” The pack snarled again, but Adrian lifted his hand, silencing them. Every muscle in his body coiled with the need to strike, to end this rogue before he could poison Jasmine further. Yet he knew Kael was clever—every word was designed to destabilize, to plant seeds of doubt. And worst of all… some of those seeds might take root. Jasmine found her voice, though it trembled. “Adrian…” Her eyes darted between them. “What truth?” Adrian’s heart clenched. The bond howled between them, demanding honesty, but the battlefield was no place to unravel centuries of secrets. Not with Kael watching, waiting to exploit every crack. “Not now,” he ground out. Kael laughed, the sound bitter and sharp. “Not now, not ever. That’s the Alpha way, isn’t it? Command, control, conceal. But me?” He stepped closer, and the warriors around Adrian bristled. “I offer freedom, Jasmine. Not a gilded cage. Not the cold shadow of a man who decided you were unworthy.” The words hit harder than claws. Jasmine’s knees almost buckled. She had tried to bury that night, the way Adrian had rejected her before the entire pack, the humiliation that still haunted her dreams. To hear Kael drag it into the open—here, now—was like ripping the wound raw again. Her chest heaved, torn between rage and pain. Adrian’s eyes flicked to hers, his control splintering. For the first time since Kael appeared, she saw fear in his expression—not of the rogue, but of her turning away. Kael saw it too. He pressed forward, voice low and compelling. “You don’t belong to him, Jasmine. You never did. You belong to yourself. And if you come with me…” His smile curled. “…no Alpha will ever tell you otherwise again.” The clearing buzzed with shock. The audacity of the rogue—offering choice, offering escape—struck at the very foundation of the mate bond itself. Jasmine’s lungs felt too tight, her blood too hot. Two forces tugged at her—Adrian’s bond, Kael’s fire—and she was caught in the center, stretched to breaking. Adrian stepped closer, towering, his voice a command and a plea all at once. “Look at me, Jasmine. Whatever poison he spills, remember this: you are mine. By blood, by bond, by fate. No rogue can sever that.” Her breath shuddered. Kael snarled. “Fate? Or control? Tell me, Alpha—do you love her, or do you just need to win?” The words struck like lightning. Even the pack shifted uneasily, glancing between their Alpha and the rogue who dared to speak truths they didn’t want to hear. Adrian’s chest rose and fell, his wolf a storm beneath his skin. He wanted to rip Kael apart, to silence him forever. But Kael wasn’t just claws and fangs. He was a strategist. He knew the sharpest blows weren’t physical—they were emotional. And Jasmine was at the center of them all. “Enough.” Adrian’s voice thundered. “This ends tonight.” The wolves erupted, claws flexing, teeth bared, ready for war. Kael smirked, his rogues circling, eyes alight with the hunger for blood. But Jasmine—Jasmine couldn’t breathe. Her legs trembled, the burn of the bond nearly dropping her to the ground. She could feel Adrian’s fury, Kael’s hunger, the entire pack’s bloodlust swirling around her. And in that moment, she realized something terrifying. This wasn’t just a fight between Alpha and rogue. This was about her. She wasn’t a bystander anymore. She was the prize. The catalyst. The weapon. And the longer she stayed silent, the more dangerous it became. “Stop!” Her cry cracked through the clearing like glass shattering. Every wolf froze. Even Kael tilted his head. Jasmine’s chest heaved as she stepped forward, her voice trembling but clear. “I am not a prize. I am not a pawn in some war between egos.” Her eyes cut to Adrian, burning. “You rejected me once. You don’t get to pretend that didn’t happen.” Adrian’s jaw tightened, guilt shadowing his expression. Then her gaze shifted to Kael. “And you—you don’t know me. You don’t get to decide I’m some symbol of freedom just because it suits your war.” The silence that followed was deafening. For the first time, both men seemed caught off guard. Jasmine’s pulse pounded as she realized the truth she had been avoiding since the bond first burned into her veins: neither of them had asked her what she wanted. And maybe—just maybe—her choice would decide more than her heart. The tension snapped back taut as Kael smirked, his storm-grey eyes glittering. “Then choose, Jasmine. Him or me.” The clearing held its breath. Every wolf, every rogue, every shadow of the night bent toward her. Her lips parted, but no words came. She couldn’t—not yet. The weight was too heavy, the bond too suffocating. Adrian’s eyes blazed, his voice low and raw. “Don’t let him take you from me.” Kael leaned forward, his voice a whisper that cut through the silence. “Or from yourself.” Jasmine’s chest seized. The fire inside her surged, demanding release. She stumbled back, clutching at her chest, and the earth seemed to tremble beneath her feet. The power wasn’t theirs. It was hers. The clearing erupted into chaos—wolves shifting, rogues lunging, Adrian and Kael crashing against each other in a fury of claws and teeth. But Jasmine hardly heard it. The fire in her veins had become an inferno, spilling out of her, setting the world alight. And for the first time, she realized she wasn’t just bound by the mate bond. She was becoming something else.
