I looked around me and nodded in satisfaction. The room I was given in the dormitory is a little bit large for me but still, I am glad the room is mine alone. If I had a roommate, it would be hard to sneak out at nights. A town this big would require my surveillance every night if possible. I did not go out in the remaining time of the day and just stayed in resting and reviewing what I needed to do. The structure of the school can be easily memorized and my escape routes are easily planned. I slept in the afternoon and woke up at 7 pm on the dot. I dressed in black leggings, a black long hoodie and black sneakers, I made sure to put on a black beanie to hide my red, conspicuous hair. I waited for the school to close before I went out through the door when no one was on the hallway and exited through the fire exit, the window is not a good route today since some students are hanging around there by the bench, just below the window.
“Hey did you hear? Zane rejected someone again today. I wonder if he gets tired getting confessions almost every day.” I heard someone say around the corner and stopped on my track.
“I know but his twin is also famous herself but she is in her own world, Zane is protective of her also. It would take a mountain of courage to confess to her if I were a man.” Two girls were leaning in the wall and smoking.
It would take a long time to wait for them to finish since it is an open field at this point, I’m supposed to turn the corner and use the shadow of the building to get to the wall fence. I guess I have no choice but let them see me. I removed my beanie and my hood, my hair flowed out. I walked out of the shadow and walked past them, they paused to look before turning away and chatting again. I guess people pass here often. When I was out of their sight, I returned my beanie and hood before speeding up my walk to a sprint. The fence wall is a bit high and I looked around for leverage, the tree is the closest one. I climbed it and easily jumped off the wall. I stood still to see if anyone is around but I chose the wall by a small alley so as I suspected, no one was around especially when the alley is dark and creepy.
The town is still alive at this time of the night so I just walked around normally to blend in. My purpose is to memorize the ins and outs of the town, the alleys and the buildings. I would not be able to do this in just one night but it is okay to start today. The exchange program is only applicable for 2 months and I will lose my cover. 2 months is long but it is also short, I do not know what I am going to find here in town but I want to bet on the children. The pack in this town was not properly informed but they are willing to help especially since this is happening in their territory. The Silverpaw pack is known to be the strongest pack around but I do not want to rely on them solely, I have to get involved somehow. However, speaking of Silverpaw pack, that boy from years ago came into mind.
“Hi! Good morning!” Someone greeted me when I came out of the door in the morning. A short girl, shorter than me that is, with colourful highlights on her hair and round eyeglasses is standing by the door.
“Hello?” I answered back.
“I am Tilda, a working scholar, I will be touring you around school today and I have the first subject with you. Oh let me fix that.” She said and reached to fix the ribbon on my neck, a part of the school uniform.
“Thank you.” I said when she stepped back but I admit that I almost swatted her hand away with the sudden movement.
“You’re welcome. Shall we go?” Tilda led the way.
Tilda took me around the school as she said and seeing it in the blueprint and pictures compared to real life has its differences but this is helpful. Back at home, the schools are separated, high school and college has its own locations but this school is huge because the two are merged. Tilda did not take me to the college buildings but she told me that we are allowed to go there to visit or to just hang out with the college guys. We did not manage to tour the whole school since we’d be late if we go to the other side of the school but Tilda tried her best to give me tips, some dos and don’ts, to make up for it although I did not mind at all. When we arrived at the building where the classroom of the first period is located, I saw many students hanging around by the hallway. Some stared and said hi when Tilda told them I was an exchange student, even some girls whom Tilda seem feel intimidated. I can understand why since the girls have strong personalities but I guess they are not that bad when they stopped to talk. I felt Tilda visibly sigh out in relief when the girls walked away. I looked at the girls walking away and I was actually reminded of Taylor and her gang back at school.
“So this is your locker for two months.” Tilda said and I took out some things from my bag and put it in the empty locker for starters.
“So the library will be lending you the textbooks you will need for the entire time that you are here and I am sorry but I will not be the one to guide you the rest of the way.” Tilda said when I closed the locker that is nowhere full or does it really matter?
“That’s fine. Thank you for today.”
“But I will definitely see you around especially in this class.” Tilda said as she led me inside a room. Everyone looked at us when we entered and Tilda introduced me then I was reintroduced when the teacher came in.
The rest of the morning periods were filled with introductions and questions from other students. However, when class starts, I got time to relax since no one is bothering me. When the period before lunch ended, some girls offered to take me to the cafeteria and invited me to sit with them, I politely accepted. It actually will not do good if I am seen sitting alone, more people will bother me.
“There she is!” I heard a familiar voice say a bit loud when I was paying at the counter for a piece of apple and juice. With the noisy cafeteria, I ignored the voice but I found Tilda when I finished paying, she looks a bit…red in the face.
“Are you okay? You look red.” The shade became deeper and she cleared her throat.
“Abigail, this is Zane. Zane, Abigail. She is the exchange student. Okay…bye.” Tilda scurried off and I took notice of the boy who was standing near Tilda. He smiled at me. It’s him, the guy from before.
“Hi, I’m Zane. I will be your student guide for the rest of the way during your stay.” He said as he offered me his hand. He does not recognize me?
“Hello. I am Abigail.” His blue eyes tell me that he does not recognize me. I guess, it kind of works for me.
“So why don’t you sit with me and my friend as a start?”
“Well…” I said and looked at the girls who invited me. They were behind me looking happy and excited for some reason.
“It’s okay. Go!” The girls said and I expressed my gratitude to them.
Zane led me to a table where two boys and a girl were sitting. The girl introduced herself as Zoya and pulled me to sit next to her. The other two boys are called Grue and Levi. They are a friendly group but I am still being wary of Zane. Although a few years have gone by, there is a possibility that he will recognize me since I recognize him.
“Do you know why Zane was chosen to be your guide?” Levi suddenly asked and I shook my head. “You are a werewolf aren’t you?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Then that is why. Zane is the Alpha’s son.” Levi said and winked.
“Oh okay.” I just said.
The truth is that aside from being a werewolf and my name, no other information should be revealed to other packs during missions as contradicting as it sounds when you go undercover. If they ask questions, my answers should be a lie. So far, no one in this group is asking much about where I am from.
“So aside from helping you out here in school, I also get to show you around town.” Zane said when lunch was over and he was walking with me to my next class. Eventually, he is a year older than me so a grade higher than me.
“That’s so nice of you. Thank you.”
“We have to look out for our own species.” He winked. “So do you want to drive around town after school today or…?”
“Today would be fine.”
“Then I will also would like to invite you to dinner, it will give you some ideas on where to eat in the future because in all honesty, the food here is not always great.” I smiled.
“Okay.”
