Darnell finally reached the door of his apartment at the dawn. Only then he, at last, allowed himself to breathe out and relax: he was almost at home. Slapping his pocket, he remembered that there were no keys to the apartment either. He raised his hand to knock, but when he clenched his fist, his eyes dimmed from pain. The wounded palms were not only bleeding but were slightly swollen too. It looked like the bushes he had fallen into were also poisonous. Darnell kicked the door loudly several times, hoping to wake Madeleine up. There was not even the slightest rustle coming from inside. He kicked the door again and shouted as he approached the door: “Madeleine, it's me, open up! Madeleine!” The girl, who was used to the noisy orphanage, slept deep and was far from being a light sleeper.
