Poor Khalid. He has an Awatef complex, I thought. “I’m sure you’ve noticed I live without my wife,” Khalid continued. “Awatef lives with Mona in her father’s house. Abdul Razzaq’s illness was the final straw in our relationship. The obsession bugged me for years. I always worried that Awatef was just waiting for the right opportunity to leave me. When her father fell ill, she started to visit him daily, then she began to spend the night with him, and finally moved in to live with him.” The wine bottle was almost empty as Khalid continued his story. “I discussed it with her but she just said, ‘I can’t leave my father! No man can ever replace my father.’ “‘What about me?’ I asked her. “‘We’ll see each other all the time, and you can come to my father’s house whenever you want,’ she said
