Shadows and Strategies

The heavy oak doors of the Alpha suite clicked shut as Marcus stepped inside, bringing with him the faint, sharp scent of damp earth and coming rain. "Did the patrols report anything, Marcus?" I asked immediately, stepping out from the kitchenette with two steaming mugs of coffee and setting one down on the mahogany desk near Caleb. Marcus shook his head, adjusting his dark tactical jacket. "Nothing at the main gates, Alpha. But our trackers found boot prints near the secondary perimeter. Someone tried to slip past the outer boundary around two in the morning." Caleb clenched his jaw, his green eyes flashing with dangerous golden light as he stared down at the boundary map. "Aaron's scouts are getting bolder. They're testing our response times because Vane hasn't delivered the council's formal challenge yet." "How many guards do we still have at the lower gates who haven't taken Vane's bribes?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. "Roughly forty percent," Marcus admitted grimly. "The rest are either bought out or too terrified of the elders to pick a side before the full moon." "Forty percent loyal isn't enough if Vane decides to launch an armed mutiny inside the packhouse," I warned, stepping closer to Caleb. "We can't just wait for the full moon assembly to catch them off guard. They'll outnumber us at the residential gates." Caleb looked up, meeting my gaze with fierce intensity. "We don't need numbers right now, Maya. We need undeniable proof. Vane thinks he's operating safely in the shadows, but he's getting sloppy." "What are you getting at, Caleb?" Marcus asked, leaning forward. "I mean Vane arranged a clandestine meeting with three senior elders for tonight," Caleb growled softly, a dangerous smirk touching his lips. "He thinks he's securing their final votes for the trial. He's meeting them in the old archives room beneath the east wing." I raised an eyebrow, a dry smile touching my face. "An archive room with only one heavy entrance and thick stone walls. That sounds less like a tactical meeting and more like a trap waiting to be sprung." "It is a trap," Caleb agreed, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register. "And we are going to walk right into it. Marcus, I want you to position our loyal elite trackers outside the eastern corridor by midnight. No weapons drawn unless I give the explicit order." Marcus nodded sharply. "Understood, Alpha. I'll make sure the perimeter is locked down tight so no one slips through the lower tunnels." "Make sure you grab some coffee before you head out, Marcus," I offered with a soft, tired smile. "You look like you haven't slept in two days." Marcus offered a brief, respectful half-smile. "Appreciate it, Maya. I'll manage." With a sharp salute, Marcus turned and exited the suite, locking the heavy oak doors tightly behind him. The silence that rushed back into the room felt heavy with anticipation. Caleb didn't waste a second. He closed the distance between us, his large hands reaching out to gently cup my waist. "You shouldn't be down in the archives tonight, Maya," Caleb murmured, his thumb brushing against my hip. "It's going to get dangerous." I let out a disbelieving laugh, resting my hands against his solid chest. "Dangerous? Caleb, my entire life for the last five years has been dangerous. You really think I'm going to sit here sipping coffee while you and Vane have a showdown?" "This isn't a game," he warned, his voice thick with possessive worry. "Vane is cornered. Cornered animals bite." "Good thing I brought sharp teeth," I retorted, tilting my chin up with a defiant smirk. "Besides, if we're going to expose a traitor in front of the entire pack, I want a front-row seat to watch his master plan collapse." Caleb stared down at me for a long moment before a soft chuckle finally broke through his serious expression. "God, I missed that stubborn fire of yours." "You only say that because you know I'm right," I teased softly. "You're always right," Caleb admitted, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss against my forehead. "Just... stay behind me tonight. Promise me." "Mommy? Daddy?" We both pulled apart, turning to see Leo standing in the doorway of the bedroom, rubbing his sleepy eyes and clutching his stuffed toy. Caleb walked over in an instant, scooping the boy up into his arms with a wide, effortless grin. "Hey, little wolf. Did you sleep well?" "My tummy is rumbling," Leo mumbled, burying his face against Caleb's shoulder. "Well, your mom and I were just talking about breakfast," Caleb smiled, carrying him toward the kitchen. "Who's ready for chocolate chip pancakes?" As Caleb tossed Leo into the air, making the boy shriek with happy laughter, the heavy weight of the impending midnight confrontation lifted just a fraction. Let Vane plot. Let the council conspire. We were ready for whatever midnight had in store.
