The heavy oak doors of the Alpha suite clicked shut as Marcus stepped out, leaving Caleb and me alone in the dim quiet of the room. Outside, the storm had finally burned itself out, leaving behind a cold, damp silence.
Midnight was fast approaching.
I stood by the dressing table, zipping up a dark tactical jacket. I slid a silver-hilted dagger into my boot sheath, testing the weight of it.
Caleb leaned against the bedroom doorframe, watching my every move with eyes that burned like molten gold. "You're still planning on coming down to the east wing. That's not a question, is it?"
I met his intense stare through the mirror. "Did you honestly think I would stay locked up while you confront Vane? I'm the one he tried to discredit, Caleb. I want a front-row seat when his mask slips."
Caleb exhaled a heavy breath, crossing the room in two long strides to rest his hands firmly on my shoulders. "If Vane makes a single sudden move, you stay behind me. No heroics, Maya. My primary focus tonight won't be the council. It will be making sure you walk out of those archives breathing."
I placed my hand over his warm knuckles. "I know how to take care of myself. But I promise—I won't do anything reckless."
"Good," he murmured, pressing a fierce kiss against my neck. "Because if anything happens to you, I'll tear this fortress down stone by stone."
Ten minutes later, the hallway outside was pitch black. We moved like ghosts through the winding stone corridors, descending deeper into the subterranean levels of the east wing. The air down here smelled heavily of old parchment and dust.
"They're inside," Marcus whispered from the shadows of an archway ahead, nodding toward a heavy iron-banded wooden door. Faint strips of yellow torchlight flickered from the gap beneath it.
"How many?" Caleb asked quietly.
"Vane, three senior elders, and two guards outside," Marcus reported, tapping his tactical blade. "My trackers have the stairwell sealed off. Nobody gets in or out."
"Let's go say hello," Caleb muttered with a dangerous smirk.
We crept down the final stretch of the corridor. The two guards didn't even have time to draw their weapons. In a swift, silent takedown, Caleb and Marcus left both guards slumped unconscious against the stone wall.
Caleb didn't bother knocking. With a brutal kick, his booted foot connected squarely with the center of the door. It splintered inward with a deafening crash, shattering the quiet secrecy of the room.
Inside, the archive erupted into panic.
Vane jumped up from a heavy oak table so fast his chair crashed backward. Across from him, the three senior elders recoiled, turning pale as Caleb's dominant alpha aura flooded the room.
"A-Alpha Caleb!" Vane choked out, his eyes darting frantically before locking onto me. The color drained entirely from his face. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private council assembly!"
"Is it, Vane?" Caleb asked, his voice dripping with lethal sarcasm. "Funny, I didn't see an RSVP for a treasonous conspiracy meeting."
"You have no proof" Vane stammered, raising a shaking hand.
Marcus stepped through the doorway right behind us, dropping a heavy leather pouch and a stack of intercepted letters directly onto the oak table.
"We have your signature, Vane," I spoke up, stepping out from the shadows of Caleb's shoulder. "We have the bank ledgers showing your bribes to the lower guards, and the exact transcripts of your secret correspondence with Aaron."
Vane stared at the documents, his mouth opening and closing like a fish.
One of the senior elders rose shakily, glaring at Vane with absolute horror. "Is this true, Vane? You conspired with an enemy pack?"
"He's lying!" Vane shrieked, lunging desperately for a silver-plated dagger on the table. "Kill them! Kill them all!"
Before Vane's fingers could graze the handle, Caleb moved.
It was a blur of blinding speed. Caleb crossed the room, his massive hand clamping around Vane's throat to slam him backward against a towering bookshelf. Heavy tomes tumbled down in a chaotic cloud of dust.
Vane gagged, his heels kicking uselessly as Caleb lifted him off the ground.
"You wanted a trial by combat, Vane?" Caleb whispered, his voice a dead-cold rasp. "You wanted to question my bloodline? Look at me. Look at my mate. And tell me who holds the crown."
The remaining elders backed away into the corner, trembling under Caleb's alpha dominance and abandoning their colleague completely.
I walked slowly toward the desk, picking up Vane's fallen dagger and tossing it aside. I looked down at the choking beta.
"Your little coup is over, Vane," I said quietly. "The full moon assembly in two days isn't going to be a trial for my son. It's going to be your public execution."
