"Wake up, Maya. They're already waiting."
Caleb's deep voice cut through the heavy morning silence like a blade. I bolted upright, my muscles instantly coiling into a defensive stance, every nerve on edge. Leo was still fast asleep beside me, curled up tightly under the thick duvet, breathing softly.
Across the room, Caleb stood by the towering window, half-dressed, his broad shoulders tense and scowling as he looked out over the courtyard. Without a word, he picked up a bundle of dark emerald fabric from the chair and tossed it onto the edge of the mattress.
"Put that on," he instructed, his voice low and uncompromising. "The council doesn't wait for anyone, Maya. Especially not today."
I glared at the dress, then snapped my gaze up to meet his. "I'm not playing dress-up for a bunch of judgmental old hags, Caleb. Where are my normal clothes? Where is anything that feels like *me*?"
"Maya, stop fighting me on every single thing," he growled, taking a sharp step closer, the raw pressure of his presence filling the room. "You're the Luna now. They are going to look for any excuse to tear you apart. You need to walk in there looking untouchable."
"I'm a prisoner with a fancy title," I snapped back, snatching the emerald fabric off the bed with a bitter motion. "Go wait outside. I need to get Leo ready and brace myself for whatever circus you've signed us up for."
Caleb's jaw tightened until a muscle ticked sharply, but he swallowed whatever argument he wanted to make, turning and walking out of the room without another word.

Outside the heavy doors of the east dining hall, the atmosphere changed instantly. The stone corridors felt colder, shadowed by history and rigid tradition. A young omega maid scurried past us in a rush, her eyes glued to the floor and her body trembling in absolute terror as she caught a whiff of Caleb's dominant alpha scent. It was a stark reminder of how brutal this pack could be under normal circumstances.
When Caleb pushed the massive oak doors open, the low murmurs buzzing around the long mahogany table died out in a fraction of a second.
Five elders sat perched like vultures at the far end of the table, their faces carved from decades of prejudice. Elder Elara sat at the center, her milky, aged eyes locking instantly onto Leo, who was sleepily clutching the hem of my emerald dress with one tiny hand.
"So, the stray finally brought the pup to slaughter," Elara rasped, her voice grating like sandpaper against the polished wood.
Caleb's hand instantly clamped onto the small of my back, his touch burning hot and intensely possessive. The air in the room grew heavy, charged with static. "Watch your tongue, Elara. He is the Blood Moon heir. Speak of him with respect, or I'll clear this entire room right now."
"He's a half-blood anomaly," a scarred, heavy-set elder named Vane barked, slamming his massive fist onto the table so hard the silverware rattled. "Pure-blood lines built this pack and kept it safe for centuries. We won't let a bastard sit on the Alpha throne!"
Before Caleb could lunge across the table—his muscles bunching up like coiled springs—I stepped forward, physically cutting him off. The adrenaline rushed through my veins, hot and fierce.
"Bastard?" I echoed sharply, my voice ringing clear and steady against the cold stone walls. "If you're so obsessed with pure bloodlines, Vane, maybe you should look at how weak and fractured this pack became while your precious 'pure' leaders ran it into the ground. Caleb has strengthened Blood Moon more in five years than your outdated laws have in fifty."
Sharp, collective gasps erupted around the table. No one let alone a human-blooded outsider had ever dared to talk back to the senior council with such open defiance.
Elara cackled, a dry, ugly sound that made my skin crawl. "Bold words for a human-lover who was thrown out like trash five years ago. Who gave you permission to speak at this table, girl?"
Caleb's chair scraped violently against the stone floor as he stood up to his full, towering height. The air pressure in the room plummeted instantly. The oppressive, suffocating weight of his Alpha aura slammed down on everyone present, making even the hardened elders choke for breath and drop their eyes.
"She speaks because I allow it," Caleb said, his voice a lethal, deadly whisper that echoed in the dead silence. "If any of you have a problem with my mate or my son, you are welcome to step down from the council right now. Let's see how long this pack survives without me at the helm."
Nobody breathed. Elara's face flushed a deep, mottled red with rage and humiliation, but she clamped her mouth shut, glaring down at her hands.
Without waiting for an answer, Caleb grabbed my hand, his grip firm, warm, and entirely grounding. "Meeting adjourned. Leo starts shift-training next month. Prepare for it."
He dragged me out into the hallway, slamming the heavy oak doors shut behind us with a resounding bang that echoed through the quiet corridor.
"You're completely insane," I whispered, breathless, as he pulled me into a secluded architectural alcove and pinned me gently against the cool stone wall, caging me in with his broad frame. "You just declared war on your own inner circle."
Caleb's dark eyes softened as he looked down at me, his lips brushing softly against my ear, wrapping his dark, comforting scent around me like a shield. "Let them try. I've been at war for five years, Maya. But for the first time in my life... I finally have something worth fighting for."
