The silence shattered the moment we stepped inside. The foyer of the packhouse was just as I remembered: towering stone pillars, dark oak paneling, and the sharp, musky scent of wolf. But this time, it didn't feel like home. It felt like a trap.
Caleb didn't give the crowd a second chance to question him. He placed a guiding hand on the small of my back, his touch scorching through my thin shirt, and steered us toward the grand staircase.
"Make way," he commanded, his voice devoid of emotion, yet radiating enough authority to make the strongest warriors in the room bow their heads and retreat.
I could feel hundreds of eyes burning into my skin. The jealousy, the confusion, the shock it was a tangible weight. Some of the younger wolves looked at Leo with wide, wonder-filled eyes, but the older ones, the ones who had witnessed my expulsion five years ago, glared with icy hostility.
We reached the second-floor landing. Instead of turning toward the west wing where the servant quarters and the small, cramped rooms I’d once occupied were located Caleb kept walking. He marched straight toward the east wing. The Alpha suite.
I stopped dead in my tracks, pulling my arm free from his grip. "What are you doing?"
Caleb paused, his back stiff. He turned slowly, his eyes darkening. "I’m taking you to our room."
"No," I said, my voice firm. "I’m not staying in the Alpha suite. Put me in a guest room. Put me in the basement for all I care. I am not playing house with you."
Caleb stepped closer, his shadow engulfing me. The air grew thick, vibrating with the sudden shift in his mood. "You’re not a guest, Maya. And you’re certainly not a servant. You are my mate. And my mate sleeps where I sleep."
"That title didn't mean anything to you when you threw me out," I shot back, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "And it doesn't change what we are now. You’re an Alpha who made a mistake, and I’m a mother trying to keep her son safe. That’s it."
"It’s not 'that’s it'," he growled, the vibration of it hitting me in the chest. "Leo needs a secure environment. The security protocols in this wing are the highest in the pack. It’s the only place I can guarantee no one will get near him."
Leo, sensing the rising tension, tightened his grip on my neck. He buried his face in my hair, his small body trembling.
Caleb’s expression softened instantly. He looked at Leo, then back at me, his gaze pleading a side of him I’d never seen before. "Please, Maya. Don't punish him because you hate me. He’s exhausted. Look at him."
I looked down. Leo was fighting to keep his eyes open, his head lolling against my shoulder. He was done. He had been through too much in one night. My resolve crumbled. I couldn't drag him through the hallways for another argument.
"Fine," I whispered, defeated. "But we’re sleeping on opposite sides of the bed."
A small, almost imperceptible smirk tugged at the corner of Caleb’s mouth. "We’ll see."
He pushed open the double doors to the suite. It was massive a cavernous room decorated in deep greys and blacks, with a panoramic view of the forest. It was luxurious, cold, and lonely.
I walked to the oversized bed and gently laid Leo down. He was asleep before his head hit the pillow. I tucked the duvet around him, my hands lingering on his back.
When I turned around, Caleb was standing right behind me. Too close. He had discarded his jacket, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing veins and cords of muscle that made my breath hitch.
"He’s beautiful," Caleb said quietly, staring at the bed. "He’s... he’s perfect, Maya."
"He is," I agreed, my voice cold. "And he’s mine. Don't forget that."
Caleb finally looked at me, and the predatory intensity was back. "He’s ours. And tomorrow, the pack is going to realize that everything they thought they knew about me about us is about to change."
He walked toward the en-suite bathroom, pausing at the door. "Get some rest. You’re going to need it. The elders are coming for breakfast at eight."
The door clicked shut, leaving me alone in the dark, staring at the sleeping boy who was the center of my entire world, and the man who had the power to either destroy us or rebuild everything I had ever lost.
