The Hollow Below

Zelin's ankle twisted unnaturally as a cold, clawed hand burst from beneath the mossy trail and clamped around him. "Tch—!" He staggered, trying to shake it off, but the ground beneath him began to shift, dragging him downward like quicksand. The soil cracked, dirt rising around his leg. His sword was halfway drawn when... A deep, guttural rumble shook the forest. Somewhere behind him, he heard Shen Guang shout, followed by Shen Liang's sharp command, just before a second tremor cracked through the earth. Zelin's breath caught. More hands. Everywhere. Pale, long-fingered, talon-tipped hands erupted from the soil like a plague, grabbing, clawing, pulling. The ground broke open beneath them all, a thunderous shattering of stone and dirt. And then... They fell. The descent was fast, chaotic, a blur of stone, claw, and echoing yells. Zelin crashed hard onto his back, pain rattling through his spine. Dust rose around him in thick clouds. His ankle still stung from the demon's grip. The demon fell with him, hissing, disoriented. Zelin rolled, hand already forming a sigil, his tongue flicked sharp and low as a whisper, ready to take control. But before he could finish the command... A flute sang. Clear. Cold. Precise. The demon's head exploded mid-lunge, black blood splattering the walls of the cavern. Zelin shielded his face just as two more bodies dropped from above, Shen Liang and Shen Guang, landing in practiced rolls beside him. Zelin coughed, rubbing his back. "What a graceful entrance, gentlemen." Guang groaned from the ground. "We fell into a demon hole. Shut up." Liang remained silent, already scanning the space. His flute was back at his side, but his hand hadn't left it. The three stood now in a massive subterranean cavern. The air here was damp and chilling, the ceiling lost in darkness above them, jagged with hanging stone teeth. At the far end of the cave lay something impossible, a massive underground lake, glowing faintly with an eerie, blue-white light. It shimmered, quiet and still, as if breathing. The glow didn't come from the water itself, but from hundreds, no, thousands of tiny organisms, drifting like will-o'-wisps beneath its surface. Zelin's breath caught. Not from awe. From recognition. He had been here before. A long, long time ago. When he was still Feng Wuxin. Before he had mastered control over the demon tongue. Before he had become the thing others feared. This place... it had spoken to him. Now, it was calling again. Guang stepped toward the water cautiously. "What is this place?" Shen Liang walked beside him, eyes locked on the glowing lake. "No maps mention caverns beneath this forest. This... isn't natural." "No," Zelin muttered under his breath, "it's not." The moment he said it, the walls groaned. A long, echoing moan, like something shifting far in the deep. Zelin's spine tensed. Liang turned sharply toward him. "You know something." Zelin met his gaze, forcing a lazy grin. "What? I can't admire the view?" Liang didn't blink. "The demon didn't attack you." Zelin shrugged, casually. "Must've thought I was pretty." Liang stepped forward, now just feet away, voice low and pointed. "You knew the sigil just now. You were about to command it. That's not temple cultivation." "Coincidence," Zelin said with a smirk, "I've got a lot of hobbies." Guang looked between them, tense but unsure. The air thickened. Liang's fingers were already twitching near his flute again. Zelin held up his hands mockingly. "What? You gonna kill me down here, Saint Shen Liang? Then you'll get to feel the pain, too. Remember?" His smirk turned dark. "We're cursed, remember?" Liang's jaw clenched. The tension between them was about to snap when... The lake rippled. The three turned. In the water, something moved. Not beneath the surface... But within it. A slow shift. A shadow rising. Huge. Zelin's smirk dropped. Even he didn't recognize this. The glow dimmed. And then a massive eye opened beneath the lake, pupil narrow and vertical, staring straight at them through the shimmer. None of them spoke. Not a breath. Not a sound. Only Zelin, whispering under his breath. "...That's new."
