The Huiling Clan

At the top of the long staircase, Luo Zelin stood before the towering gates of the main temple. The air up here was thinner, crisp and biting, and the stone beneath his feet hummed faintly with spiritual energy. Great red pillars framed the entrance, carved with dragons that coiled upward like flames reaching the sky. Gold leaf shimmered on the curved eaves, catching the last of the daylight. Zelin stepped forward, the doors parting without a sound. Inside, in the center of a wide stone courtyard surrounded by hanging prayer banners, sat an elderly man, cross-legged on a raised platform, motionless in meditation. His white green-ish robes billowed slightly in the breeze. His beard was long, and his posture regal but serene, like a mountain that had never moved. Zelin paused, hesitant. Then said flatly, "I'm Luo Zelin." The man did not open his eyes. For a moment, there was nothing but silence and the distant rustle of paper talismans fluttering on the walls. Then, in a calm, measured tone, the elder finally spoke. "Welcome, Zelin." He opened his eyes slowly, deep and silvered with wisdom. "I have been expecting you." Zelin scratched the back of his neck, unsure of how to respond. "Uh... yeah." He hated this. The stillness. The calm. It was too quiet. Too clean. It reminded him of things he'd lost. Things he wasn't supposed to feel. The elder stood with the grace of someone who had fought gods. His robes fell into place as he turned. "I am Shen Xuanyi," he said. "You'll begin training tomorrow at dawn." Zelin's smile faded. "Shen?" That name. That cursed name. Zelin blinked, the realization slamming into him like a thunderclap. Of course. This was his clan. Shen Liang's clan. His family. His blood. Of all the clans to be sent to... Zelin narrowed his eyes and muttered to himself, "...That bastard's probably here too." He followed Shen Xuanyi silently, eyes scanning the temple walls as they walked deeper. The corridors were lined with ancestral scrolls, portraits of previous clan heads, sacred relics in glass cases. He could feel it in the air, this wasn't just any clan. This was the Shen Clan. Disciplined. Powerful. Feared. And he was in enemy territory. At the end of the hall, Shen Xuanyi suddenly turned and tossed something over his shoulder. Zelin caught it, a training sword, smooth and surprisingly light in his hands. "Use this for now," the elder said, already walking away. "We begin tomorrow." He disappeared around the corner without another word. Zelin stood alone in the corridor, the sword cold in his hands. Just then, another figure approached. A man in his mid-twenties with strong brows, long tied-back hair, and a sharpness to his face that reminded Zelin of someone unpleasant. The man gave a polite bow, though there was a practiced stiffness to it. "I'm Shen Guang." He offered a calm, professional smile. "I've been asked to guide you to your quarters. Follow me." Zelin sighed and fell into step behind him. More Shens. They were everywhere. This was a nest of enemies. They walked past courtyards where disciples were sparring under the setting sun. Every strike was clean, disciplined. These people were dangerous. Trained from birth. Loyal to the Shen name. Zelin's fingers curled tighter around the sword hilt. Eventually, they reached a modest room near the outer edge of the temple grounds. Shen Guang opened the sliding door and gestured inside. "You'll be staying here. Meals are held in the outer dining hall before sunrise. Training begins at first bell." "Got it," Zelin muttered. Shen Guang nodded once, then turned and walked away, silent as falling snow. Zelin stepped inside and slid the door shut behind him. The room was small, but clean, mats, a narrow desk, a single candle, and a simple bedroll tucked into the corner. A paper window let in the orange glow of twilight. He dropped the sword beside the wall and collapsed onto the bed with a heavy sigh. Exhausted. And conflicted. This place was nothing like he expected. He'd thought of sneaking off, stirring trouble, maybe corrupting a few talismans just to remind everyone that Luo Zelin was a menace. But... Now, lying there in the quiet, in a room someone had prepared for him, in a temple built by the family of the one who killed him... He didn't know what to do. He was Feng Wuxin. A killer. A demon master. The feared scourge of a past age. He should have torn this place down the moment he arrived. But something stopped him. Was it exhaustion? Or something else? He turned his face toward the ceiling and closed his eyes. He hated this feeling. This weight in his chest. This flicker, just a flicker, of something like... doubt.
