Chapter 33: The Summons

415 Words
The summons came at dawn. Elara felt it before Lucien said a word—the bond tightening sharply, not with fear, but with authority. It was different from the warnings she’d grown used to. This was deliberate. Formal. “They’ve called a council session,” Lucien said quietly as he stood near the window, the city still half-asleep behind him. Her stomach dropped. “About… me?” “Yes.” The word settled heavily between them. Elara drew in a slow breath. “So this is it,” she said. “The part where I stop being observed and start being judged.” Lucien turned to her then, his expression controlled but tense. “You will not stand alone,” he said. “But you must understand—this isn’t just about whether the pack accepts you. It’s about whether they believe you belong.” The bond pulsed at that, steady and unyielding. They arrived at pack territory just as the forest stirred awake. The air was colder here, heavier, thick with something ancient and watchful. Elara felt it immediately—the land itself reacting to her presence, measuring her in ways she couldn’t explain. Wolves lined the perimeter of the council grounds, their attention unmistakably fixed on her. No hostility. No warmth. Just scrutiny. Seraphine Vale stood near the stone steps, composed and confident, as if this moment had always been hers. Her eyes flicked to Elara, sharp with quiet satisfaction. “So,” Seraphine said calmly, “the human answers the call.” Lucien’s voice was ice. “Watch your words.” Seraphine smiled faintly. “I am. Every word matters today.” Elara straightened, ignoring the weight pressing down on her chest. She met Seraphine’s gaze without flinching. “Then let’s not waste them.” A murmur rippled through the gathered wolves. The council elders took their places, the atmosphere shifting from tension to ceremony. One of them stepped forward, eyes ancient and unreadable. “Elara Cross,” he said. “You have been marked by the Alpha bond. By pack law, you are required to stand before us.” Elara felt the bond surge—not pulling her back, but pushing her forward. “I’m here,” she said clearly. As the council prepared to speak judgment, Elara understood the truth at last—this wasn’t just about Lucien’s choice. It was about whether she was willing to claim a place in a world that would never be gentle with her.
