Chapter 35: The Old Ways

The challenge came disguised as courtesy. Seraphine approached Elara later that evening, her expression calm, almost welcoming. The council grounds were quieter now, shadows stretching long between the trees as dusk settled in. “You handled yourself well today,” Seraphine said smoothly. “Many would have broken under that pressure.” Elara didn’t miss the edge beneath the praise. “You didn’t look disappointed.” Seraphine smiled faintly. “The old ways demand trials. Observation alone is… insufficient.” Lucien stiffened beside Elara. “What are you suggesting?” “Nothing unreasonable,” Seraphine replied. “A rite of inclusion. Tradition requires it when an outsider binds to an Alpha.” The bond flared sharply—warning. Elara met Lucien’s gaze. “What kind of rite?” Seraphine’s eyes glinted. “A proving.” The word echoed like a challenge. “You’ll walk the boundary paths,” Seraphine continued. “Alone. At night. No interference. No protection.” Lucien’s voice dropped dangerously low. “Absolutely not.” “It is law,” Seraphine said calmly. “One the Alpha himself once completed.” Elara’s breath caught. She could feel the trap now—elegant, ancient, and cruel. This wasn’t about acceptance. It was about seeing whether she would fail. Or break. The elders murmured quietly among themselves before one nodded. “The rite stands. If she refuses, the bond will be deemed a liability.” Silence followed. Elara felt the bond pulse—not pulling her back, but urging her forward. “I’ll do it,” she said. Lucien turned sharply. “Elara—” “I won’t hide,” she continued, steady despite the fear curling in her chest. “If this is what it takes to prove I belong… then I walk.” Seraphine inclined her head slightly, satisfaction barely concealed. “Brave,” she said. “Or foolish.” Lucien stepped closer, his voice urgent but controlled. “The boundary paths are dangerous. They test instinct, not strength. You’ll be exposed.” Elara reached for his hand briefly, grounding them both. “Then trust me,” she whispered. “Like you asked me to trust you.” The bond surged—strong, defiant, alive. As night crept toward the forest and the boundary paths waited in silence, Elara understood the truth—this trial wasn’t meant to welcome her into the pack. It was meant to see if she survived long enough to claim her place.
