Chapter 18 Accidents

1301 Words
Luke looked around and saw nothing unusual. He went to the door and knocked No response. Knock, Knock Luke knocked. Still no answer. “Lindsay, open the door. I know you live here.” After a while, there was a slight noise in the room. “Who are you? What's the matter?” “I'm Davy's partner. We met the other day. Davy asked me to deliver something.” “No, I don't. You Go.” “Davy is watching from the car. You should know Davy's temper. If you don't open the door, he'll kick it open when he gets here. Don't make things complicated.” “Squish...” The door opened, and Lindsay bowed her head to the side, waving Luke in. The room was in a mess, with all sorts of things lying around. There were some leftovers on the table, a pair of men's boots on the bottom, and a big-head television set against the wall. This kind of television was rare in China. Lindsay picked up her boots and threw them into the bedroom. “So, what can I do for You?” Luke didn't want to stay any longer and handed the naloxone over. “This is from Davy. It Won't help you get clean, but it will make the drugs less harmful.” Lindsay picked up the naloxone. “I know this d**g can bring addicts back to life... I used to give it to others, but I never thought I'd see the day.” Luke guessed, “You were a paramedic?” “No, cops, Narcs. Didn't Davy tell you?” Davy was silent for a moment. “We don't talk about personal things very much.” “That's good.” Lindsay opened the door and gave him a send-off. “Don't let him come back. Don't let me get in the way of his future.” Luke didn't know what to say as he looked at his down-and-out former colleague and walked right out the door. ...... Luke got back into the car, and Davy looked upset. After a moment's silence, Davy asked, “How is she?” Luke wasn't going to talk about the boots. Davy, a veteran detective, would have guessed. It would be embarrassing for everyone to say, “Your Wife was a cop?” “Well... that was a long time ago. At first, I thought she was having an affair. She used all kinds of excuses to stay out at night, but I didn't realize she was on drugs. By the time I found out, it was too late...” Davy sighed, “Anyway... Thanks.” “Ring, ring...” Luke's cell phone rings. “Hi, Beautiful.” Daisy's voice came over the phone. “Luke, I checked the security cameras at the firm. I didn't see anyone suspicious entering my office. But there was an unexpected power outage on Wednesday night, and for a while the monitoring wasn't working.” “Wednesday night?” "Yes." “How long?” “About forty minutes.” “I see. Keep the monitor and wait for my call.” Luke hung up and Davy asked, “That girl from Last Night?” “Yes, there's a problem with her.” “Looks like things are going well between you two.” “It's not what you think. She's asking for my help.” “Comeon, I've been there. A lot of relationships start with help. That means she's interested in you.” “Davy, remember that mugger I caught?” “Of course, the bastard's name was Tim, and I was part of his interrogation. According to Tim, he was short of money recently and wanted to make some quick money. When he saw the news about the Taser robbery, he tried to make it look like a copycat. Is there a problem?” “Daisy is a lawyer. At dinner last night, she said that my office had been tampered with. I suggested that she check the security cameras and found that there was a temporary power outage on Wednesday night and that there had been no surveillance for some time. Don't you think it's a coincidence?” “What if she was nervous?” Davy asked. “A lot of victims get nervous and paranoid when they're mugged.” “Daisy is in good spirits.” Luke analyzed both scenarios last night, but both were based on the aftermath of Daisy's robbery. But now the monitoring shows that the problem occurred on Wednesday night, so the reasoning can not be used. It would be a coincidence if it were. What if it's not a coincidence? Daisy's office was broken into on Wednesday night and robbed on Thursday night. Suppose the unsub enters Daisy's office to steal something, but doesn't find it, and then robs it the next night. In that sense, Thursday night's robbery was probably not a random act, but a premeditated, targeted crime. The suspect, Tim, was lying, probably about something bigger. “I need to talk to Daisy.” “You go. I want to be alone.” “Okay, I'll see you later,” Luke said as she tried to get out of the car. “Don't be silly. You Can't get a taxi here. I'll put you in a good place.” “You've become Sweet.” “Yeah, somebody tried to replace me.” “If you change your temper, become less impulsive and listen to better advice, I might consider not changing partners.” Davy pouted. “Well, you'd better replace me.” ...... 11:30 am, flying bar. Luke and Daisy were supposed to meet here. First, because both of them are familiar with this, and second, there are few people here at noon, relatively quiet, suitable for conversation. The bartender sees two people walk into a bar together, reveal surprised facial expression, “Wow... so quickly... Ace!” “Dany, one lamb, one steak.” The bartender gives Daisy an “OK” sign and, when he's not looking, gives Luke a thumbs-up. Luke smiled and ignored him. Daisy took a sip and moistened her throat. “Luke, what am I going to do now?” “I'm going to ask you a few questions to determine whether the blackout was accidental or deliberate, okay?” “Okay.” “Has your firm ever had a power outage before?” “Not once that I know of.” “If the suspect stole on a Wednesday night, you would have found something on a Thursday. Why on a Sunday?” “I met with clients on Thursday morning and defended myself in court in the afternoon. There was no time to file papers that day.” “Have you offended anyone recently?” "No." “Don't be so quick to deny it, but think carefully about whether you are working against other people's interests, or whether some of your actions are causing other people's interests to suffer.” “I'm a lawyer. My job is to protect the interests of my clients. It's normal to have conflicts of interest, but those are legal acts. I can't think of anyone who would commit theft.” “It's not just about the theft,” Luke said. “If it wasn't an accident, it probably had something to do with Thursday night's robbery, which may have been more serious than we thought.” “You mean I could still be in danger?” Luke explains, “Suppose the suspect came to your office on Wednesday night and stole something that was important to him or them, and then robbed you on Thursday night, and this time it didn't work. Our suspect Tim will never get out, but he may have an accomplice……"
