Deception

Glancing through the window of her mother’s hospital room, Isabella sighted wearily as she sat down on the visitor’s seat. It has been complete twenty-four hours since her mother has been unconscious and there has been no sign of her waking up anytime soon. “Doctor! How is she doing now?” She stood up almost immediately as the doctor came out of the intensive care unit. With the gloomy look on the doctor’s face, she knew what he had to say was not something good but she definitely wasn’t ready for what hit her next. “I’m sorry ma’am, but your mother is in coma and can’t be awoken anytime soon.” Isabella stumbled back and quickly caught herself, a coma? What was she to do now? She stared at the doctor and wanted to brush past him to see her mother who was in a vegetable state already, when the doctor held her back. “What? I’m still not allowed to go in and see my mother?” “It’s not that, it’s just that…” The doctor trailed off and Isabella knew that it was yet another bad news but she didn’t think she was ready for that. “Coupled with her still being in coma, she’s suffering from a brain tumor, she has a malign growing in her head, and she’ll need surgery to eradicate that.” Isabella swallowed the lump that grew in her throat, with the way the doctor said this it was obvious that her mother probably had this growing in her head. Or had she known? And just decided to hide the truth away from her knowing that she would stress herself out. “The surgery, how much will it cost?” She asked with despair clearly written in her voice. The doctor looked down at this young girl and felt great pity for her, she looked neat and tidy but he knew she was not well to do, but he must tell her the price for saving her mother. “It’s quite expensive ma’am…” “Just tell me the price for the surgery already!” She half yelled from fright. The doctor sighed and let go of her arm gently as he saw she was not ready to argue or to be strong headed again. “Around eight thousand dollars!” “What? You’re kidding me right now, huh doctor?” But with the look in his eyes, she knew that he was not lying but in reality really saying the truth. “I’m really sorry ma’am. I really wished I had a hand in this, but right now, there is nothing I can do to help.” With that, he walked away sadly as he shook his head slightly, at least heaven shouldn’t have put such a load on the poor girl. With the look in her eyes, he knew that she had really gone through a lot in her lifetime. Several thought swam through Isabella's already messed up head. Where on earth will she gather such a heavy amount of money. Taking in a deep breath, she pushed the door to her mother’s ward and entered the brightly ventilated room. She could clearly see the weird connection of wires around her body with the oxygen mask plastered to her face. She couldn’t even breathe on her own again. The tears that she had been trying to hold back since, streamed down her face without shame. With a sob wrenching itself harshly from her throat, she walked silently to her mother’s hospital bed, she was as pale as snow and as cold as ice itself. The once vibrant woman was now lifeless in her vegetable state, she was deep somewhere between life and death. “Mum, why? How long have you been suffering in silence?” She knew too well that she wouldn’t get a reply anytime soon and that made her to cry the more and without control at that. First, her older sister disappeared on her very own graduation from high school. She was meant to come for her graduation and at the same time, she was the key host of the celebration, and when she didn’t show up, it really caused a lot of havoc, but last minutes’ arrangements were made and the event was a blast, but that blasted her life negatively as she knew that something terribly wrong had happened to her sister. Two years went by and the police eventually gave up on the case. All the way, her mother had been a fighter, but how tough had she been? She heard the door open behind her and turned, “Ma’am it’s already way past visiting time, you can always come back in the evening” The kind nurse said as she also assured her that she’ll take good care of the vegetable woman as she had been assigned to her room. Isabella nodded and with one sad glance, left the ward. There was only one place that she dared to go for help. Her dearest betrothed. ******* “Sir, you have a visitor” “And who could that be?” “She said she goes by the name… Finland… yeah, that’s it, miss Finland” Stroking his bearded jaw casually, a soft wolfish grin formed on his face, “Hmmm…let her in” Seconds later, Melvin stared at the vivacious young lady that strode into his office. She sure was a piece of artwork. But she looked sad, why? “Hmmm…welcome Isabella.” All she did was to nod indignantly to his greeting. “What’s wrong?” She looked up as her emerald eyes shone with despair, she has never been one to beat around the bush and she went straight to the point. “My mother is sick” “And what am I to do about that?” He said off-handedly as if her mother was nothing but a piece of trash. Isabella frowned, what did he mean by that? Wasn’t he meant to at least show concern and perhaps alongside a helping hand. If he was truly her so called betrothed, he was meant to care at least. “And I would need some money please” She said that part with great difficulty but became enraged when he didn’t even say anything at all. Few minutes later, he finally spoke up, “Under one condition” Isabella's eyes brightened up, “What condition is that supposed to be?” “Spend a night with me!” Isabella's eyes widened in pure horror, “But we aren’t even married yet!” He laughed at that like she was some sough of joker or clown. “Why does that seem to surprise you, after that we’ll get married as soon as possible. So what do you say?” Isabella didn’t feel sorry for herself but felt sorry for her mother who was blinded with the love of having a rich son in law and didn’t know the truth that he was nothing but a filthy scum bag. A p*****t at that. With the last hope she had shattering, she stood up with pride in her shoulders, “It was nice coming to visit you. Have a nice day” And with that she left without turning back at all. As the door shut, Charles banged his fist tightly on the table. “Who the hell do you think you are?” He yelled out to himself. He was purple with rage, no one has ever dared to turn him down, in fact every lady in the country would love to spend even a minute with him. But this girl had the nerves to turn him down without even batting an eyelid. Suddenly, he relaxed as she realized something, she didn’t have anyone else to run to. He’ll love to watch the story unfold and so he kicked back and relaxed. “Very soon, you’ll come running back to me Isabella, you’ll run as fast as flash”
