We finished our dinner and headed out to the jeeps. I decided to ride with Maddison after throwing my bag in Camilla’s jeep. We drove for five minutes listening to party music.
“So, what’s up?” Maddison asked as she turned the music down. “All jokes aside, how are you feeling about this whole Damion thing?”
I shrugged, “I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Come on Amber, you know I have your back. I’m the one whose been with you through all the bullshit, and I know you’re hurting so talk to me.”
I sighed, “I’m lost Maddy. On one hand, I’m happy that this bullshit is over. It was so tiring trying to keep his attention and balancing school at the same time. On the other hand, I think I want him back and I want to make it work.”
“This is y’all second time breaking up, Amber, I say it’s time to move on. He knows how important school is for you. He should be supporting you, not mad ‘cause you don’t want to party every weekend. He’s more play than he should be, and you know that. He has always acted like he’s the trophy and you should be happy to have him. When it’s the other way around! You can find ten guys just like him, he won’t find another you. You got looks and smarts, like I said you’re the whole package. What he got to offer? d**k and a headache? That’s a dime a dozen.”
I laughed, “d**k and headaches.”
Maddison grinned, “That’s all he got. But I know, six years is a long time to walk away from. But imagine doing another six years of what you’ve already been through.”
“Hell naw! Never again!”
“Exactly! You’re better off being single and doing you at this point, you damn near already were. He was literally a ball and chain, stopping you from all these delicious men out here.”
We both laughed, “I know you seen that Wayne’s fine ass been checking you out in English class.”
I rolled my eyes, “Who doesn’t he check out?”
“True,” Maddison giggled, “But I’m not saying rush into anything. There’s no rush, we’re only twenty-one! We still need to have fun and make mistakes. So, what! Your parents got it right in high school, that doesn’t mean you have to.”
“True, true.” I sighed. “I guess I’ll get over it.”
“If you wanna be sad, be sad but don’t let him take over your life.”
I nodded, “I hear you.”
“If you don’t want to dance with any of these guys, you can always shake that ass on me.” Maddison teased.
“I bet you would like that.” I laughed.
“You damn right!”
We both laughed and turned the music up, I was planning to take my girl’s advice to heart and try to have fun at the party.
