Aidan's POV:
I looked into Odette's clear sky-blue eyes, "I genuinely mean that.."
We had never been alone before, Natalie and Daniel were always with us, and at this moment I let my feelings surface.
Odette seemed to be stunned beyond words and so I gestured for her to move forward. We continued with the climb and soon it was an hour since we had started the trek up High Forest Mountain.
As we went further, climbing slopes and crossing rivers, continuing in the direction of the mountain peak which was still far off, I caught myself thinking "What had I done? Mama had told me to be patient and wait. Now I had done it. Odette hadn't said a word since my declaration and now I was going to lose one of my dearest friends.." This brought me to another realisation "She has changed me.... and I did not even realise it till now...." And though this was not a question, I could feel Drake agree with my thoughts.
I was so deep in contemplation and reflection that I did not notice Odette talking to me until she came and stood right in front of me. "Sorry, you were...?" I asked her, and she answered: "I was saying, why don't we take a small break here.. just for a few minutes.." "Yes sure, of course. Sorry I got pulled into my thoughts.."
Odette sat on the trunk of a fallen tree and tapped the spot next to her, "Aidan, come sit with me...."
Unknown's POV:
This was turning out to be better than I expected.
It seems that the dragon and the fairy had a bond. Had the boy already celebrated his coming of age ceremony?
But from the fairy's expression to his statement before, it seemed that they were not sure of the bond yet... which meant that he was not of age yet but would be of age soon.
They had continued the climb, while I followed them silently and discreetly, till they came to a halt. The fairy wanted to take a break.
This was good. There were no signs of the other two and in a few moments, I could begin the execution of my plan. I just needed to get the right opportunity.
Odette's POV:
"Aidan, come sit with me..." I said, tapping the spot next to where I was sitting. He sat next to me but I could feel anxiousness radiating, and was unsure whether it was from him or me.
We did not move for a few seconds, but then Aidan took and held my hand like it was a dainty and delicate flower.
Mustering all the courage I could, I entwined my fingers with his and turned to look at him, but his attention was already completely directed towards me, and I got lost in his mesmerising eyes, golden brown with green flecks. Never before had I looked into those eyes so openly.
We stayed there looking into each other's eyes and time passed by. It seemed that neither of us wanted to look away or let go, we were in a world of our own. Aidan cupped my cheek with his other hand, and whispered "Odette, we need to continue with the trek or Natalie and Daniel will get worried." Hearing this pulled me back to the present, and I stood up rather abruptly, but he did not let go of my hand.
We continued the trek, and throughout we held hands. I could feel him trying to ensure that he did not hold too tight, which made me smile. We continued without a break and had covered more than sixty percent of the path to the peak. I was stunned by the beauty of this mountain when I suddenly heard a twig snapping. I turned around to see the origin of the sound, and that's when I saw a huge shadow right next to the broken twig. I pretended to not notice and continued to look around the place in awe, while discretely putting a charm to detect any concealing magic around us, and saw the shimmer around the shadow depicting the presence of a cloaked being.
I gave a light squeeze to Aidan's hand before letting go and swiftly turned around casting an uncloaking spell, to reveal a facially disfigured man, completely clothed in black. He looked so horrid that I high pitched shriek escaped my lips.
Aidan had also realised that something was amiss, and on seeing the man immediately transformed into a dragon and roared.
